There’s a problem preventing trains going between Ulm and Augsburg - the red route through Ulm is the normal but can’t be used

The orange line would seem to me the best alternative

But my Stuttgart - München ICE is diverted on the green route. Which seems a hellish wrong way around!

gerbi, (edited )

@jon A large part of the orange alternative is single tracked, which complicates scheduling and worsens delays, depending on exact schedules, you might even have to regularly wait for the train in the opposite direction. The orange alternative also has lower speed limits for the majority of the route. So all in all, the orange alternative isn't necessarily faster.

Edit: Turns out that parts of the green alternative are also single tracked.

@gerbi the green one is likewise plenty of single track!

gerbi,

@jon My bad, I missed that fact when I looked at the track in openrailwaymap.

Stuttgart - Nuremberg remains rather mediocre.

@jon reminds me the ICE Frankfurt - Furth Which had to make other route and could have used the HSL from Rieneck (where leaves the river Main).

ostkraut,

@jon is it just me or is the new Ulm Wendlingen HS Route missing on the map

@ostkraut oddly at that zoom level yes. But it is on open railway map. Red one here

@jon

ICE on Crailsheim - Ellwangen?

Finally, the promise made in 1993 of a HSL Paris - Stuttgart - Nuremberg - Berlin has become reality 🤡 🤡 🤡

A hell of a journey...
TEE "Rheingold" once had through-cars to Munich in the early 1980s, running via this area.

One WR had been rebuilt to "Club" car, where Bavarian songs and dances were performed

@kentindell well they are - the first part of the new line is open. But it’ll all only be fixed in 2 years when the new Stuttgart station opens.

    12 years of works...

Originally, it was supposed to be complete at the same time as Wien Hbf...

    seniorexpat,

@jon Problem probably because of Steige = steep hill.

@necrosis I’m in the one behind you - and diverted because of that problem I presume where you’re stuck.

@jon The yellow/orange line is not possible due to construction works in Bopfingen until end of October.

@theswaeg Ah ha. Right. Thank you!
