Then he said, “The best way to fix the PHP problem at this point is to make the alternatives so outstanding that the choice of the better hammer becomes obvious.”

What happened instead: #NodeJS joined forces with #ES6 in 2015 and #JavaScript ate the world.

@nicomen @randomgeek @codinghorror I left out the part where #GitHub bulit #ElectronJS for its #Atom text editor around the same time, also using #NodeJS. It was really the perfect storm. Server-only languages and frameworks never had a chance.

@kevin @randomgeek @codinghorror Yes, #WordPress with its #Gutenberg block editor where almost everything but registering a plugin is done in #JavaScript. Or the #Calypso WordPress.com and desktop frontend which is all #NodeJS

The past five years have seen an explosion of #headless #CMS projects, including ones that drive the API provided by WordPress’ #PHP core.

In short, JavaScript is eating WordPress too.

@georgeharito @randomgeek @codinghorror Oh, that was just the wake-up call that the script kiddies needed adult supervision. #npm got it in the form of being bought by #Microsoft-owned #GitHub. Careful what you wish for.

The punchline is that @isaacs wrote npm in reaction to how “terribly” #PHP’s #PEAR and #Perl’s #CPAN did package management.

@mjgardner @randomgeek @codinghorror @isaacs I wrote that in jest, I don’t think that was clear in my initial post. For what it’s worth, I love PHP, I love Laravel, I love Composer, I love JavaScript, I love Node.js, I love CSS, and I tolerate Wordpress 👍

@philip @randomgeek @codinghorror Taking a broader view, I think #JavaScript, #PHP, and other still-developing multi-paradigm languages are all carcinizing at different rates. We just don’t know what the ideal converged evolution looks like yet.

(The fact that one recent language has an unofficial crab mascot is no indication that’s the one, though. Sorry, #Rustaceans.)
