@arstechnica Meanwhile, in France:
(Seriously, I'm grateful to the EU for fighting the corporations when America long surrendered to them).

@arstechnica they should do the same for Android devices which seize getting updates in less than one year.

"Every time a new iPhone is released, his team finds another part that’s been locked to work only with a specific Apple device. First it was just a chip on the motherboard... list of parts with repair restrictions stretched to Touch ID, Face ID, and eventually the battery, the screen, and the camera... Serialization is theoretically illegal in France according to a 2021 anti-waste law"☹️😡

My Samsung 8 still kicking, few time's. though I upgraded a few time's.

queshiraz,

@arstechnica Had a 3-yr-old iPad refusing to charge. Apple Store said $500 to repair, might as well apply that to a new iPad. I found iResQ, who fixed it for $150. Apple is not a green or progressive company. I honestly don’t think they have ever been.

danielandrews,

@arstechnica I’m all for this being looked into but I find it funny that Apple is the one in the crosshairs when their stuff gets updated and lasts way longer than the competition.

Parts-pairing is the height of arbitrary, artificial manufacturer manipulation.

If a company like Apple believed any of its own hype (or wanted anyone else to) they wouldn't engage in such bullshit.

@arstechnica This has not been a concern with any iPhone I have ever owned. I used the first gen 4GB iPhone as my primary phone for five years. Even the 4S I got for my mother a decade ago is still in service as a TV and lights remote controller for guests.

@arstechnica Tell that to my wife’s first gen iPhone SE. It just received a security update.

@arstechnica Of all of the devices we have in our family, Apple stays relevant and updated FAR longer than others. Especially iPhones and iPads.

jamesn,

@arstechnica this is especially absurd when one discovers that used and remanufactured iPhones account for half of the secondary handset market.

@arstechnica Tim Apple won't be happy with this. Looks like billions will be spent to make this problem going away fro Apple. This is probably the last we will hear about this. I will be happy to be proven wrong.

@arstechnica not France. A French non-profit, because our government doesn't care, except for a fake useless "repairability index".

@arstechnica @forteller When I replaced my iPhone 5s with an iPhone 10 (because I wanted more storage and a larger screen), it had gotten 7years of system updates, and was still receiving critical security patches. I had the battery replaced and gifted it to the kid of a friend, and it’s still in use. My Sony android got 2 years of updates. But yeah. Apple headlines drives traffic…

sub_o,

@arstechnica The first step of planned obsolescence is an irreplaceable battery, battery has a short lifespan, and continuous usage that warms up the battery reduces its lifespan rapidly.
The second step is apps that gradually require more and more computing power for tasks that don’t require them. Why the fuck do I need latest cpu and gpu for a todo list?!

I really want Framework’s modular approach to electronics to be widely supported, and maybe get some government subsidies.

SeeS,

@arstechnica my guess: it’s not only Apple.
