I often hear excuses from US pro gun people who say stuff like: "yeah but not everywhere is unsafe" and "mass shootings don't happen all the time everywhere"

But the thing is..

The fact that it DOES HAPPEN is insane :amaze: Just because it didn't happen near you THIS time doesn't mean it's okay..

Sorry but wtf..

@stux Yesterday I called both my US senators & state governor to say "Do Something!" I have one good senator, the other is a total Trump tool, my state governor signed a law so that teachers may keep guns in their classrooms. 😔

@FallsMom Goood job! :cat_hug_triangle:

I was literary thinking the same, just something would be better then nothing

@stux Phone calls & voting & yard signs are about all I feel I have the power to do. . .

reay,
@reay@mastodon.social avatar

@FallsMom @stux It’s never not head-shaking that the legislation like that — clearly the only possible answer to bad people with guns is to arm good people, too, and OF COURSE that includes teachers in a classroom, I mean, why are we even debating this? — is exactly the kind of thing that makes basically every other country on the planet think the U.S. is total apeshit crazy.

We get that most Americans DON’T want that, which makes its ever-worsening even nuttier.

leon,

@stux This person is living proof that "a good guy with a gun" doesn't exist. He was trained in gun safety... He TRAINED gun safety, and now look at what he did. As long as the Constitution exists as it does, this will continue. A full-on Constitutional Convention is required.

stux,
@stux@mstdn.social avatar

@leon Exactly.. this does not work period :sad_cat:

I wish soo much they would finally start acting and at least do something 😩

Even if it's just to shut me up, ill take it

leon,

@stux There's no way it will change through the normal way. The only way it will change (without resorting to a violent revolution the left will lose) is through a federal constitutional convention that redefines gun laws, or one that defines secession.

MollyNYC,

@stux

Not just that.

I live in . This is an American city, governed under laws, and any American can come here to visit or to reside. We have our share of criminals, and more than our share of nutcases.

But it’s the safest big city in the .

That’s ENTIRELY because pretty much the only ones here with are .

That’s the only major relevant difference between NYC and other US cities.

That’s the power of strong laws.

fsnk,

@stux
every time it happens, you see people saying "things like this don't happen here"

every time

condalmo,

@stux This one is literally up the street from me. We're still locked down, they haven't caught the guy.

Our state senators voted earlier this week to make it easier for veterans with mental health issues to obtain guns.

You can't make this stuff up

MugsysRapSheet,

@stux My dad is a gun collector, so I've been around "2A absolutists" all my life. What most people don't understand is that expecting these people to give up the is like expecting people like me to willingly give up the 1A.

But both the and the can have restrictions. Rapidfire assault weapons IMHO are no different than yelling "Fire" in a crowded theater (endangering many innocent people in an instant.) There IS a solution:

losfromcp,

@stux But the do happen all the time. I'm fairly certain I saw a stat that we averaged more then 1 per day. It's unacceptable, yet accepted.

According to the new Mike Johnson, more prayer can prevent gun violence...

stux,
@stux@mstdn.social avatar

@losfromcp Yup.. almost 1 or 2 per day on avg i believe

there's even a dedicated website that keeps all stats..

nahuellofeudo,
@nahuellofeudo@mastodon.social avatar

@stux also, shootings don't need to happen all the time to be traumatizing. Just ask the children who (since as early as kindergarten) have to go through shooter drills at school.

syntaxseed,
@syntaxseed@phpc.social avatar

@stux If it happened all the time everywhere, they'd be living in a warzone. I can't understand the mentality that "we can only change things when it gets to daily nightmare status." 🤦‍♀️

stux,
@stux@mstdn.social avatar

@syntaxseed Imagine running a country that way :amaze:

Everything is invisible until you'll see it yourself

Oh wait! That sounds like the 🇺🇸

syntaxseed,
@syntaxseed@phpc.social avatar

@stux Sometimes I think it comes from people being so darn overwhelmed & depressed for economic & social reasons... that 'one more problem to solve' is just unbearable.

At least that's my most optimistic take.

jonquass,

@syntaxseed
I feel like it's a combination of many things. We have core groups of ultraconservatives who are literally preparing for rapture, and a larger group of conservatives who can't think of anything to do because they've accepted whitewashing history so they don't know any better. Then we have attempts to solidify historic power centers through gerrymandering and voter disenfranchisment. And it doesn't help that we still have a relatively small portion of the population in favor of liberal ideas, most don't want conflict directly and are afraid because everything seems so overwhelming

    @chris @stux but:

    Ran a bank to the ground (while making huge amounts of money personally)? Poor thing, sure, here's a bail-out.

    emanuel,

    @chris @stux Unfortunately that's happening in Europe too. The egocentrism is a trend from more than a decade but I think after the pandemic it got worse and worse. That's why right wing populist parties are getting more votes each election. The capitalism is swolling the socialism. In a moment on our history where we have to look for each other, we're doom to repeat the same mistakes from the past. The climate crises will accelerated things even further, I believe.
