atomicpoet, Lately, I've been increasingly advocating for the idea of running your own Fediverse server if you have the opportunity. The reason behind this is quite simple: I firmly believe that no one, under any circumstances, should have control over your online presence.
When it comes to people, especially large corporations, they can be unpredictable and subject to sudden changes. That's precisely why it's crucial not to entrust something as important as your online identity to someone else. Your online identity should not rely on Google, Apple, X or any other entity. It should be uniquely yours and no one else's.
Maybe some would call this my personal "ideology," but I've encountered countless situations where a vital service was compromised, and consequently, I was forced to leave a platform. Frankly, I'm becoming tired of experiencing such situations. If I'm going to be on social media, I want to dictate the terms.
I simply don't care if a famous "influencer" is on Threads or Bluesky. If they decide not to make their content accessible to me, that's their choice. I'm sorry to see them go, but what matters to me more is no longer being at the mercy of someone else's whims.
I understand that running your own Fediverse server may not be a walk in the park at the moment, but just because something is challenging doesn't mean we shouldn't strive to make it easier. In fact, when there's a problem, it becomes even more important to work towards finding a solution.
