“It’s easier, and more comfortable, for #Google to argue that it’s all about the #GreenBubbles. The hard truth is that #iPhones and #iOS are simply better overall.”

@gruber via https://daringfireball.net/linked/2023/06/01/android-switcher-reasons

The #CIRP report at https://cirpapple.substack.com/p/why-android-owners-switch-to-iphone disingenuously leads with “for some buyers [the reasons] include the desire to use #iMessage and #FaceTime among family and friends.” But it turns out that number is only 6%!

#iPhone #Apple #Android

asjmcguire,

@mjgardner @gruber regardless of any arguments against Apple adopting RCS - there is a simple compelling reason for why Apple SHOULD.

This is the reason. It's a MANDATED part of the 5G spec. That's it - the single most important reason. The GSMA states on their website that it is mandated that 5G devices and networks MUST support RCS.

@asjmcguire @mjgardner That doesn’t seem like a good reason at all.

asjmcguire,

@gruber @mjgardner that's fine. I'm just happy that whatever Apple decide, iMessage lock in WILL end shortly. The EU digital Markets act kicks in next year. And Apple, Google, WhatsApp and many others will be required to allow interoperability of messages between each other. Something long overdue.

@asjmcguire @gruber As I just mentioned elsewhere in the thread*, mobile messaging interoperability doesn’t necessarily mean über alles: https://william-dudley.com/2022/03/29/are-we-about-to-see-a-new-round-of-messaging-interoperability/

asjmcguire,

@mjgardner @gruber I'm OK if it doesn't end up being RCS, just as long as there is interoperability finally.

I personally like RCS, but I think it needs major work, if you get into a few groups that are chatty, the battery really takes a hit. For Android at least, I suspect it's because there is a lot of IO going on, because messages are stored internally as MMS in the Android message store, and then RCS metadata for each message stored in the app data directory.

@asjmcguire #GSMA is an industry trade group and does not set the standards for #5G. That’s done by #3GPP and none of their 5G standards cover #RCS despite GSMA’s assertion that “the 5G standards mandate the implementation of RCS in 5G networks and devices.” https://www.gsma.com/futurenetworks/rcs/universal-profile/#:~:text=the%205G%20standards%20mandate%20the%20implementation%20of%20RCS%20in%205G%20networks%20and%20devices.

Saying that GSMA has a mandate over 5G is like saying the #RIAA has a mandate over audio codecs.

Also N.B.: #Apple is not listed as a member of GSMA: https://www.gsma.com/membership/industry-membership/

@asjmcguire @gruber FYI, the standards do include and . There’s a good deep dive from 2020 by analyst William Dudley here: https://william-dudley.com/2020/06/30/sms-in-5g-is-real-and-here-to-stay/

Dudley definitely bangs the drum for in his writing, but even he predicts will not support in 2023: https://william-dudley.com/2023/02/13/for-the-16th-time-my-2023-mobile-industry-predictions-with-an-assessment-of-2022-predictions/#:~:text=An%20easy%20prediction%3A%20iOS%20will%20not%20support%20RCS%20in%20any%20form%20(again).

And that was after the messaging provisions were announced last year. He had some interesting ideas on how that could happen without RCS über alles: https://william-dudley.com/2022/03/29/are-we-about-to-see-a-new-round-of-messaging-interoperability/

@lobingera @asjmcguire @gruber As long as operators continue to support #SMS and #MMS I don’t see how #GSMA can leverage them to force #Apple to support #RCS
