“It’s easier, and more comfortable, for #Google to argue that it’s all about the #GreenBubbles. The hard truth is that #iPhones and #iOS are simply better overall.”
@mjgardner@gruber regardless of any arguments against Apple adopting RCS - there is a simple compelling reason for why Apple SHOULD.
This is the reason. It's a MANDATED part of the 5G spec. That's it - the single most important reason. The GSMA states on their website that it is mandated that 5G devices and networks MUST support RCS.
@gruber@mjgardner that's fine. I'm just happy that whatever Apple decide, iMessage lock in WILL end shortly. The EU digital Markets act kicks in next year. And Apple, Google, WhatsApp and many others will be required to allow interoperability of messages between each other. Something long overdue.
@mjgardner@gruber I'm OK if it doesn't end up being RCS, just as long as there is interoperability finally.
I personally like RCS, but I think it needs major work, if you get into a few groups that are chatty, the battery really takes a hit. For Android at least, I suspect it's because there is a lot of IO going on, because messages are stored internally as MMS in the Android message store, and then RCS metadata for each message stored in the app data directory.
