Usman Khawaja being told that he cannot wear cricket shoes with the words “Freedom is a human right” and “All lives are equal” written on them, because it is a political statement (prohibited under International Cricket Council Laws) is such a weak as piss cop out. The fact that we as a society are only able to contextualize freedom, equality, human rights etc, through the lens of "politics", is a very strong indicator that we are really getting things very wrong. Freedom, equality, human rights etc, should be so deeply embedded in our cultural values, that they transcend domestic and international geo-politics. We need to learn how to discuss these issues - no matter how much discord and tension may arise, and not see it as being "political", but rather, as an acknowledgment of our deepest responsibilities as human beings on planet earth, to make things better, not just for this generation of human beings on planet earth, but for all future generations of human beings on planet earth. The worlds political infrastructures could all crumble tomorrow, and freedom, equality, human rights etc. would all still be absolutely critical ideals to work towards.
