Take advantage of every opportunity to socialize safely. On a gorgeous (but windy) 80-degree day in Milwaukee, we dined in an empty restaurant next to open window ( 2:30 pm lunch with CO2 at 500), had cocktails in a bar with open garage doors (CO2 450), and enjoyed an electric cello concert outdoors at a bar. There's never zero #COVID19 risk, but I believe I can effectively minimize risks with smart decisions.

windhorse,
@windhorse@aus.social avatar

@augieray I love to see this kind of activity. The extent to which I feel covid safe around others, is in part determined by the extent to which those people seem to be taking things seriously, and trying to act in a covid safe manner. At the very most - If I was around a group of people that I knew were taking the highest measures possible to avoid covid transmission, I would be content to sit in a room with them, windows closed, and not sitting too far away from each other. That is never going to happen though.

Usman Khawaja being told that he cannot wear cricket shoes with the words “Freedom is a human right” and “All lives are equal” written on them, because it is a political statement (prohibited under International Cricket Council Laws) is such a weak as piss cop out. The fact that we as a society are only able to contextualize freedom, equality, human rights etc, through the lens of "politics", is a very strong indicator that we are really getting things very wrong. Freedom, equality, human rights etc, should be so deeply embedded in our cultural values, that they transcend domestic and international geo-politics. We need to learn how to discuss these issues - no matter how much discord and tension may arise, and not see it as being "political", but rather, as an acknowledgment of our deepest responsibilities as human beings on planet earth, to make things better, not just for this generation of human beings on planet earth, but for all future generations of human beings on planet earth. The worlds political infrastructures could all crumble tomorrow, and freedom, equality, human rights etc. would all still be absolutely critical ideals to work towards.

Pro tip: If you can "legally justify" bombing a refugee camp, then the only conclusion is that your legal framework is inhuman and morally bankrupt.

windhorse,
@windhorse@aus.social avatar

@Wyatt I've just spent the entire last semester at Uni discussing these kinds of things (as a student) in class. "is this a warcrime?", "Is this genocide?", "why is torture morally wrong?". I now realize that these discussions were not aimed at getting students to start thinking about these things, to develop more nuanced perspectives on such things, but rather, to let students know, with no uncertainty, that these things will only ever be talked about, as a way of never actually having to get around to doing something about it. Interestingly enough, the Israeli horror show was not mentioned once. Don't mention the Nakba.

According to many of the "No" vote crowd, voting Yes will give Indigenous Australians a disproportionate amount of power in parliament, and over everyday affairs in Australia.
This is just a tiny little seed of a massive cultural shift that desperately needs to be planted. It is going to take so many generations to repair the damage that has been done to The First Nations Peoples. It was only in 1992 that they myth of Terra Nullius was overturned in this country.
And yet, there are an ignorant crowd of people that think that, by giving Indigenous Australia a voice to parliament, by constructing an advisory committee, the deeply racist status quo is going to be overturned?

I’m seeing a lot of people share conspiracies about how the government is going to activate some vaccine virus using 5G technology today. If you are posting this nonsense, please stop and seek help. You are deep in some weird, dark place, and you don’t even know it. (Also, it’s not the U.S. government, it’s the Romulans, and it’s not 5G, it’s transporter technology. Please get your conspiracies straight.)

windhorse,

@georgetakei are you implying that there is time travel technology embedded into the vaccines, and once activated, they will all send us back in time to the dinosaurs and we all get eaten? It sounds like that's what you are saying. I'm going to run with this one.

I want to address something I've been thinking about recently. As far as Religion, Afterlife, ect, I'm solidly in the "I don't know" camp, and I'm fine with that. I think any Religion, Religious Institution, or Religious Leader who has used spiritual beliefs to oppress, control, manipulate, or financially gain from other people should be both questioned and mocked, and I have no problem doing it, or with other people doing it.

The issue I run into on Mastodon is Aggressive Atheism. I have no issue with atheism at all, but I do have a problem if it's used to attack other people for their personal spiritual beliefs. If someone is making a comment about something they believe personally, and they aren't hurting anyone with it, jumping into the comments to say "PROVE GOD IS REAL" is just as annoying and pointless as a couple Religious people knocking on your door, and telling you, you must accept their Lord. This is simply a matter of respecting other people.

windhorse,
@windhorse@aus.social avatar

@RickiTarr Yeah, I think there are a lot of great things about Mastodon, and one of them is the sense of rationality that it has, in general. But yeah. aggressive atheism is akin to religious dogmatism, it's not necessary, and it only causes tension. You do you - if that means looking at the world through a purely "rational" lens, and let me be me, even if that means looking at the world through what others may consider to be irrational, illogical, and unscientific.

People are going to be VERY disappointed that REAL physics turns out to be NOTHING like the ‘science’ fiction that the current generation of physicists has grown up thinking it was, and which they have led the public to believe it was.

This is part of why I CANNOT STAND people like Neil de Grasse Tyson. They treat it all like magic and they hype it up.

NO! Physics should be about making what would be complicated plain. And REAL physics does JUST THAT. It is the world of engines and radios!
