Any tips and tricks for getting more out of Raycast? 😀

I’ve used it for a couple of years but I mostly use it as a simple replacement for Spotlight and it’s excellent clipboard history and emoji browser. I feel like I’m missing out on some cool features 👀

@simonbs Haven't seen anyone mention it, but the File Search extension is great, so much faster than Finder's https://www.raycast.com/extensions/file-search

@simonbs the window management side of things is excellent, other things I use it for:

  • working with Bear and Things
  • meeting management
  • shortcuts executor
  • the AI stuff can be useful
  • quick links are incredible
  • I use a bunch of plugins that generally help my qol
  • I also used it to replace all apps that control keyboard shortcuts and exclusively use raycast

I would really recommend checking out their YT they have some great videos showing the power of raycast

@BrendanThompson I think I’ve been using it’s window management way to little. In fact, I’ve never used a window manager but macOS’ built in so it’s probably time I try that.

I looked into Raycast’s Shortcuts integration earlier today and was quite pleased that I can add an alias to a shortcut. It’s great to be able to trigger a shortcut with very few keystrokes.

@simonbs yeah I use the shortcuts stuff ALL THE TIME, like the various lights in my office get triggered by raycast or my elgato keylight. The window management stuff is an absolute life saver though. I am a single monitor kinda guy and being able to split things and move them all around extremely quickly is one of the most helpful things possible for me :)

@simonbs @BrendanThompson I didn’t know that 👀

@simonbs It has clipboard history built in.

josemunozmatos,

@simonbs Some I did not saw here:

  • Quit-all command to quit all active apps
  • Convert Px to Rem
  • Window Management: particularly the "Reasonable size" and the "almost full screen"
  • Text replacement (Instead of TextExpander)

@simonbs too many to list at the moment, but highly recommend you check out the @raycast YouTube channel. The videos they present there are really well done and showcase a lot of features.

@simonbs I mainly use for below

  • quick links (almost for everything from google doc to frequently visited sites)
  • launch shortcuts with custom parameters (triggering CI build which pushes TestFlight build for internal users and some other actions)
  • calculator- uni conversation, time zone calc, currency exchange
  • Spotify extension
  • speed test extension
  • some hot keys to launch apps directly

@simonbs do you use the clipboard management stuff?

simonbs,
@simonbs@mastodon.social avatar

@lukechannings Yes, a ton! But for a second I digit its part of Raycast 🤦‍♂️

Like, I just discovered Quick Links. I'll use it to quickly deep link into pages in @shapedk's Confluence.

Now I'll just type "devhub" in Raycast to open our Developer Hub, which contains documentation for all developers in Shape. Easy peasy! 😃

@BrendanThompson@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs @shapedk there is also a very good confluence extension that helps wade through the muddy waters of confluence

@simonbs@mastodon.social avatar

@BrendanThompson I need to check that out. I’m hesitant to use it, though, as it likely requires access to all of our company’s documents.

BrendanThompson,
@BrendanThompson@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs yeah there is a barrier of trust that you have to overcome. You can always look through the extension code too 😃

@simonbs I use a lot the snippets for repetitive code parts (“import”, “private let”, etc), Gitlab extension as a quick way to my merge requests (same for Jira).

Other small plugins like one to format the json from the clipboard.

@rabc Just downloaded the Format JSON extension!

The Xcode plugin for Raycast is great for opening recent Xcode projects! https://www.raycast.com/SvenTiigi/xcode

BrendanThompson,
@BrendanThompson@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs yes, yes it is! So many more options than the recent menu bar item in Xcode of on the splash screen 😃. I have a keyboard shortcut that brings this exact thing up

ryanslikesocool,
@ryanslikesocool@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs there's quite a few good plugins. the one i use most is SF Symbol Search. it's not totally up-to-date, but it has most of them. there's also snippets, which are great especially for uncommon characters

A screenshot of the Raycast snippets menu. The highlighted item is a shortcut for typing the command key

@ryanslikesocool Haha, yeah! Thanks for reminding me about this 😄

@simonbs @shapedk Quick links are also great for searching. I have several that have the stubs for searching JIRA, Confluence, SAP and other enterprise-y things. I just type “jira” and a ticket number and hop right there.
