Haha I love this Australian anti-COVID PSA.

AVOID INFECTING PEOPLE YOU DRONGOS

Edit: OK this is making numbers, and I now think it’s more than likely that this is a clever edit of the original. Welp. It’s hilarious anyway. Enjoy it for what it’s worth!

Edit: The numbers seem to have come from this article:

“People who had more than one COVID-19 infection were three times more likely to be hospitalized and twice as likely to die than those who only had one infection. Those with multiple infections were also more vulnerable to other dangerous conditions; they were 3.5 times more likely to develop lung problems, 3 times more likely to have heart conditions, and 1.6 times more likely to have brain changes requiring care than people who had only had COVID-19 once.”

Underlying study: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-022-02051-3

There is discussion on the credibility of these numbers here: https://mastodon.social/

spv,

@drahardja so THAT'S why i have all this brain damage and heart issues

last year i got wasted at a concert (far too long of a story) and threw the fuck up backstage, then got home and had the worst hangover of my life

turns out, no hangover, i had covid! ever since i've been hallucinating smells and tastes and my brain doesn't work half the time and i'm tired and shit

(this post is not a joke)

johnshirley2024,

@spv @drahardja that sucks. Everyone should get every available vaccine. There's a new one good against the new covid variants.

@drahardja Man, I've had it three times so it appears I'm ultimately doomed

@DrOtto I’m sorry to hear that. I hope you avoid any long-term effects.

ackerina,

@drahardja Posting this in staff break room in espanol asap...

@ackerina I can’t wait to find out what a Drongo is en Español 😄

ackerina,

@drahardja It's Drongo - doesn't translate!

@drahardja No way this is really from the Goverment here.

ouguoc,

@mackayim2022 @drahardja I don't think it is. Google reverse image search turns up lots of earlier copies of this image without the text in the bottom-right, i.e.:

https://twitter.com/DrewInSeAsia/status/1729334297713070459

drahardja,
@drahardja@sfba.social avatar

@ouguoc @mackayim2022 Ah so it’s some creative editing…

ouguoc,

@drahardja @mackayim2022 Yeah. The first instance of this I can find is a tweet in February that (ironically) seems to have infected the fediverse as well, and recirculates periodically:

https://twitter.com/1goodtern/status/1628053663359926273

Schouten_B,
@Schouten_B@mastodon.social avatar

@ouguoc @drahardja @mackayim2022 Yeah. It seems unlikely the image is authentic with any of those ahum statistics in them, as the numbers are complete balderdash and I don't see any expert-driven health authority ever releasing something like this.

Sadly the fediverse is as sensitive to misinformation as twitter, just a little less happening as there's less of the far-right here.

mackayim2022,
@mackayim2022@mastodon.social avatar

@Schouten_B @ouguoc @drahardja Mainly, the Aus government would never be this authentic or caring about the impacts of COVID-19

Schouten_B,
@Schouten_B@mastodon.social avatar

@mackayim2022 @ouguoc @drahardja The numbers are nonsense fearmongering though. The increase in cardiovascular incidents following a COVID infection. Even the very first one, is nowhere near 3x.

And given the strong risk factor anxiety forms for development of COVID sequelae that would seem utterly irresponsible.

drahardja,
@drahardja@sfba.social avatar

@Schouten_B @mackayim2022 @ouguoc The numbers appear to have come from this article.

“People who had more than one COVID-19 infection were three times more likely to be hospitalized and twice as likely to die than those who only had one infection. Those with multiple infections were also more vulnerable to other dangerous conditions; they were 3.5 times more likely to develop lung problems, 3 times more likely to have heart conditions, and 1.6 times more likely to have brain changes requiring care than people who had only had COVID-19 once.”

ouguoc,

@drahardja @Schouten_B @mackayim2022 For whatever it's worth, I think this is the original image, posted Feb 3; it has no text on it:

@ouguoc @Schouten_B @mackayim2022 Thanks. The image is even funnier to me after seeing the original.

@camille @drahardja Apparently Drongo was a race horse 100 years ago who never won a single race, and became enshrined in Australian slang to refer to "a no-hoper, a hapless soul who, try as he might just can’t do anything right"

Thanks for the link! Once I heard them say the nickname came from a horse I found this article:

"Drongo - the immortal loser

The horse whose name became part of Australia’s language"
