Someone else can't give you rights, you have to FIGHT FOR THEM.
Without the French and the American Revolutions, the Haitian slave revolt, the liberation of South America by Bolivar, countless strikes and protests by trade unions, riots at Stonewall, dozens and dozens of liberation wars around the world, without all of these things and many more, we would still be the loyal subjects of the local king.
@RickiTarr Rights are a bit of a conundrum for me. I am always banging on about them;women`s rights, trans rights, BAME rights, disability rights etc., but the problem is that your rights have to be respected for you to be able to enjoy them, which makes them the perfect target for those on the far right to stir up trouble ..."what about the rights of the white privileged males". That is the kind of fascist dog whistle, that stirs up those who feel slighted by slight criticism of their privilege
@bobjmsn Well it's saying What about my right to oppress this group of people, Your rights should never extend to squashing the right of another group of people
@RickiTarr Exactly! I think there is a problem that was generated by rampant neoliberalism that harks back to the American dream: that everyone can become hugely successful through their own efforts, and if they are not, then it must be their own fault. All of which has left a number of particularly young white males who are not successful, but who remain convinced that it cannot be their own fault, and who think their "rights" are under attack by the rights of others.
@Pdlobster I just mean in the sense that rights shouldn't be viewed as something given and taken, obviously there are oppressed people and that's horrible
