Does anyone know of an easy way to use a computer as an automatic backup for a phone?

My mom has an android phone and takes lots and lots of photos, which have filled up her google storage to the point she can't send emails anymore.

I went over there last night and backed up a bunch of her photos to flash drives and deleted a ton of stuff from her google photos account to free up space.

But I had to turn off the auto backup in her phone so it wouldn't just fill her account up again.

She is worried about having her photos not backed up, so I'm wondering if there's a simple option for backing things up at home.

She is not very tech savvy, so it cannot be anything complicated.

@MLE_online Big syncthing fan here, but if it's affordable then for the price of half a cup of coffee each month I'd just buy 100GB Google Drive storage. Even if it just buys you time to come up with the perfect setup.

@andrewl I don't think my mom wants to do that. She's annoyed at google for holding her emails hostage because of photos

@MLE_online I use SimpleSSHD to set up ssh on my phone and then an rsync script to back up my photos.

I prefer manually running this stuff, but one could configure SimpleSSHD to be always-on as a background service (there's a checkbox for that), and then schedule a periodic rsync backup on a local machine.

Checking to make sure photos got copied (for piece of mind) would require looking at the photo folder on the pc.

Maybe not the pinnacle of simplicity, but one more option.

@pr06lefs It's got to be as simple as possible. My mom doesn't even know how to copy a file onto a flash drive.

I also use Syncthing to backup my photos. Might find the initial setup a little "techie" but once set up it Just Works

@k8quinn I can probably handle the setup and if it's easy after that, my mom can handle the rest. I will check it out

@MLE_online as long as the storage is internal and not an SD card (on an android phone for bad reasons), syncthing works pretty well. You can set it up to sync a couple different ways. A separate camera app (with a separate place to save photos) and syncthing is how I save my transition selfies without flooding the family Google photos...

Works pretty well except I have to move them out of the shared folder once a month, since I take about 1GB of selfies per month and my phone is pretty full 😅

@Specialist_Being_677 Good to know!

@MLE_online I'm using syncthing for automatically backing up the photos from my phone and that works really well, but I'd categorize that as… medium complicated depending on what you want from it. It has been super reliable though. Might not be the best solution depending on the requirements.

@slyka I think all my mom wants is to know there are copies of her photos somewhere in case she loses her phone. And all I want is to not go over there every couple weeks to manually make copies of her photos on flash drives for her

bearofroses,

@MLE_online @slyka my photos are backed up into google photos. is that sub-optimal?

@bearofroses @slyka Yes because her photos filled up her storage and google threatened to shut off her email
