Apparently, the YouTube legal team reached out to Invidious, for breaching their Terms of service. For now, nothing to be concerned about, as Invidious is its own thing and doesn’t use YouTube’s API, and thus shouldn’t be subject to the ToS, but still worth keeping an eye on:

adambyte,

@thelinuxEXP It seems weirdly sloppy: the letter is solely about breaching the API's ToS, but doesn't use the API. Therefore it's all automatically invalid.

The dev said they'll just ignore it, but I wish they'd send an insulting reply.

@adambyte That would be the best way to invite some nasty repercussions, I think. They might not use the API, but I’d be surprised if just using YouTube content without permission in another app was completely allowed as well.

Better lay low.

sgirlprivacy,

@thelinuxEXP Actually it's a Threatening mechanism they know they are in the wrong but try out, since they know user bleeding to other tool will increase with the adblock problem of youtube.

Even if invidious stop it's too late tool like that will continue

@thelinuxEXP I have always said, methods of "fixing" YouTube, (extensions, addons), and frontends (invidious, vanced) are a temporary workaround. Not a permanent solution. Twitch took back their horrible policy. Reddit and YouTube (with dislikes) aren't. This shows clearly that existence of a strong competitor allows no one bully! We should push towards Odysee, Peertube, etc. as much as we can

@thelinuxEXP I like the comment in the issue, with my extension:

and « charging millions for their API calls, blocking ad-blockers, and now this Youtube lawyers going after []. I see a pattern here, they're trying very hard to veer users out of their platforms to an user-respecting alternative.»

I really hope this will work. But there are still the incentives for and from . They still are very powerful motives.

hadrianistakentoo,

@thelinuxEXP

Doesn't sound right, but knowing Invidious doesn't use Youtube's API, it isn't really that much of a concern.

Long term speaking, though, I still think it is better to switch to alternatives like Odysee or Peertube.

@thelinuxEXP every major platform is really trying to screw everyone over lately.

gamey,

@thelinuxEXP It's unfortunate but certainly not a surprise, we have seen multiple times that at least in most cases judges seem to agree that alternative frontends are allowed but it's not a guarantee and you have to be careful. I mostly use Piped by now because it works better for me but a lot of people like the no JS approach of Invidious more and I can understand that point of view.

garrowbregenza,

@thelinuxEXP it’s a nice service helps a lot avoiding google for good. 🤞

fruche,

@thelinuxEXP Business as usual.
