Something I want to post on Facebook but can't because friends will feel attacked:

If you don't care that is at the 2nd-highest level of the pandemic,
Or that hospitals brought back masks,
Or that the CDC Director recommended masking,
Or that 10 to 20% of infections result in Long COVID,
Or that your infection could result in someone else's disability,
So you went to a crowded restaurant or event this weekend,
Maybe you're not the empathetic person you think you are.

@augieray If you friends would feel attacked by that, maybe they're shitty friends?

gunkeater,

@augieray i always find it strange when people get upset or annoyed at others wearing masks everyday by choice. it lessens the chances of them spreading something to you.

Score2,

@augieray oh no the 20 people on mastodon getting you down?

“… Or that the CDC Director recommended masking,..”

Recently? For everyone? Where did you see this?

@ABScientist@forall.social avatar

@augieray

That is basically everyone I know (Ok, probably they did not all go to a restaurant this weekend, but they do act as if Covid is a cold).

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@ABScientist I still have some cautious friends. In fact, they're coming over tomorrow (if they don't wimp out due to sub-zero windchills.) They stay home and mask whenever they have to go out, still.

larsdejong,
@larsdejong@mastodon.nl avatar

@augieray I guess they are not true friends then.

@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@larsdejong I would never evaluate friendship on any one attribute, especially not someone's psychological need for some normality, especially given how badly public health officials and the media are communicating COVID risks.

darwinwoodka,
@darwinwoodka@mastodon.social avatar

@augieray we picked up sandwiches and ate them on a bench outside in the sunshine

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@darwinwoodka I wish I could do that, but the windchill is 14 below zero right now. :D

darwinwoodka,
@darwinwoodka@mastodon.social avatar

@augieray yes, we live in San Diego for Reasons. We call ourselves California weather wussies

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@darwinwoodka I did, a few weeks ago, pick up some delicious chili and dined outside with my wife on a 50-degree day. The sun was out and there was no wind, and honestly, it was quite pleasant.

MHowell,
@MHowell@kolektiva.social avatar

@augieray Grow a spine and post it. Those remaining are the ones you want to continue associating with. Fuck the rest.

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@MHowell First, that is MUCH easier said than done. Second, that attitude would prevent me from continuing to engage with the very people whose attitudes and behaviors I most wish to influence.

tantramar,
@tantramar@nojack.easydns.ca avatar

@augieray can’t help feeling these “friends” you mention might be well past their best-before date.

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@tantramar Well, some of them are family, and I really feel I can't cut them off. And, I still think that I can, over time, influence their awareness of risks and behaviors. So, I try to keep engaging.

tantramar,
@tantramar@nojack.easydns.ca avatar

@augieray oof

pyperkub,
@pyperkub@mastodon.social avatar

@augieray @tantramar you could rephrase it to come off less harsh to those you care about. Caring about issues is never a 0% or 100% thing. Just changing the post to say I wish people would do better about all these items instead of saying they are non-caring jackholes at the end also indicates that you care about them. You already can tell it's insulting, but it doesn't need to be.

Ulrich_the_Elder,
@Ulrich_the_Elder@mastodon.social avatar

@augieray Are you confirming you are still interacting with the fascist site facebook? I would prefer to not block you but this is not a line in the sand it is a trench in the sand? So do I block you or not??

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@Ulrich_the_Elder Block away. I think it's ridiculous to block someone because they use a social media site you don't like. I continue to share political and COVID information and influence people on that platform.

Telling someone, "I interact with you here but will block you because you do good things on another site I don't like" is, IMO, silly.

I hate Twitter, but I'd never block someone for using it.

Studio_Gal,
@Studio_Gal@mastodon.social avatar

@augieray

anyone who feels attacked by this is contributing to the pandemic.

but of course you know this, and I know you know this, but I can't help but bristle at how fragile people are.

Maybe this is why I have focused, in the last several years of my life, on my and .

augieray,
@augieray@mastodon.social avatar

@Studio_Gal My friends are already tired of my harping about COVID risks and offering advice. But, I haven't stopped doing so. Still, I worry about anything that might be perceived as judgment for their actions (even though I can't stop from feeling judgment.)
