TIL: The vocals in the theme song of Disney's Gummi Bears were performed by Joseph Williams, son of composer John Williams and lead singer of Toto. 🤯

Damn this song brings back childhood memories. Think I should do a rewatch 😂

What always got me – and still does! – is the flute melody in the background of the second verse. I'm sorry, yes, this is a children's afternoon cartoon, but: this is just masterful composing.

Also, here's a video of the actual songwriters reacting to covers:

And that's also where I found this a cappella version, a real gem:

I've had to learn that the Gummi Bears have never been released on DVD or Blu-Ray set 🙄

There has been a DVD release, but it's only seasons 1–3 (of 6), and of course it's English only.

Yo Disney, I would pay 100 € right now to get a decent Blu-Ray, with subtitles and all ~42 audio languages¹, and maybe some BTS bonus features.

Apparently it's on Disney+ in 17 languages (thanks @redknight for checking) … give us a version to actually own then!

@scy Quality Settings not available, looks like 720*572

@redknight That's pretty decent, thanks 👍

No German subtitles though. Hm. I guess those were never produced.

@scy The Screenshot doesn't show three additional Audio languages, written in types I can't read ;)

Think the first one is Greece, and two look like east-asian.

But still only half way of all languages

@scy @redknight Fun fact: Duck Tales (2017) S01E17 has some Gummi Bear references :D

I've made the mistake of listening to the Russian version of the theme song.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRy5veaRL4g

The chorus starts with "мишки Гамми" ("gummi bears") like the English one does. But that's four syllables instead of three ("mishki gammi"), and now that's how it's stuck in my head and the English¹ version feels off, and … argh.

¹ and German, for that matter, which goes "Gummibär'n", i.e. drops the E to make it fit in three syllables

svenja,
@svenja@fedisabled.social avatar

@scy in swedish its Gummibjörn, Björn is also a german Name, that always makes me laugh.

scy,
@scy@chaos.social avatar

@svenja In Icelandic, they call a panda "bambusbjörn". (Or pandabjörn, but that's boring.)

@scy@chaos.social avatar

Now, , on the other hand, where the Gummi Bears are called Bumbibjörnarna, circumvented this issue completely by making the chorus start with "hipp hurra för här kommer Bumbibjörnarna" ("hip hooray, for here come the Bumbi Bears").

Anyone from who can tell me why they've used "bumbi" (which afaict isn't a word, even in Swedish)? According to the Swedish Wikipedia, the show was originally called "Gummibjörnarna", but then renamed once a Swedish dub had been produced in 1989.

@scy O.o they could just have omitted the definite article suffix (the "na" at the end), effectively calling it "gummy bears" instead of "the gummy bears", and it would have fit into the four syllables just fine...

Ok, I admit they found an elegant way to solve the problem (and it even has a rhyme!), but still... feels a bit weird because it was a problem that didn't even have to exist.

@flauschzelle Remember that four syllables was already a hack by the Russians. In the English original it's just three.

They could've done the same, sure, and it would've sounded like in the Russian version. But tbh I quite like the Swedish version as it is. It works really well and sounds nice :)

I'm sorry, of course it wasn't okay of me to write the previous post without linking the Swedish intro. ;) Here you go:
