I love that OpenStreetMap supports mapping in so much detail. You can map individual street trees, even individual surveillance cameras. https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:man_made%3Dsurveillance

But will there ever be enough volunteer time to maintain those entries? Basic business info seems so out of date. Last week I added a 115-seat theater to OSM that opened in its current location in 2015. It apparently had no presence on the map for 8+ years.

Andykmcc,

@graue I’m convinced this problem is because the data entry doesn’t meet users where they are at. It’s hard because no one uses OSM directly. It always inside other stuff. Hence me wanting to add an OSM editor to bikehopper. I wonder if it’s possible to add a basic editor into leaflet other similar OSM clients.

@Andykmcc It would be cool if there was a fediverse app with functionality similar to Yelp, Foursquare, or Instagram location tagging that integrated with OSM business/point of interest data and allowed making updates.

Andykmcc,

@graue obviously I like that idea. What I keep struggling with ideas like this “x of the fediverse” is that activity pub seems focused on ordered lists of event. Sorted by time. But yelp of the fediverse wouldn’t really work if it just showed you the most recently edited places. Maybe a server per region where you subscribe to whatever regions you want then aggregate the posts into a more traditional storage system?
