vmstan,

PSA: If you're a Mastodon user visiting a kbin site and see something you want to reply to, you don't have to have an account there to participate in the conversation.

Click on More > Copy URL to Fediverse > Paste it into the search field of your Mastodon instance > Interact just like any other post.

All because of the power of federation and ActivityPub! :masto_dance:

@vmstan sadly this is so obtuse that nobody will do it at scale. This should be a builtin that all activitypub-participating software is able to provide via a part of the contract, the ability to have automatically-routed interactions that don't require instance-jumping in the UI

@vmstan Designer who would love to make federation easier to use, here— What’s preventing this from being a more direct interaction, instead of the copy-search-paste step?

@rcbo @vmstan the Kbin site doesn’t know what your Masto instance is. The browser could provide this info, but that’s a privacy mess.

taixzo,

@chucker @rcbo @vmstan This seems like something a browser extension could handle pretty easily.

@chucker @vmstan Totally hear you on privacy.

Maybe there’s a cross-instance interaction handoff process that instances and apps could start adopting. A kind of piecemeal approval/sharing of the user’s insurance only to perform the interaction.

@vmstan Can you browse whole threads from Mastodon or only specific comments?

@tomw @vmstan At least with lemmy, copying a specific comment's URL brings up the entire thread with the comment in context. Not sure about kbin, going to test that out now!

vmstan,

This trick works for Lemmy based sites as well, although the copying of the URL is a little less obvious and doesn't seem to take you to the exact comment.

You can either right click on the URL icon or open and copy the URL.

If someone has a better way of doing this I'd like to see it. (One more reason why I like kbin better)

@vmstan "URL Copypaste Dance" works between pretty much ALL ActivityPub fedi sites regardless of the platform on source and destination!

One thing I wish would have happened in all these years is for it to become standard practice to have a "reply as ____" beside the button, and if you out your @ handle @ domain there it would do the webfinger lookup and automatically redirect you to that post in your home server so you could reply without having to do The URL Dance

We HAVE the technology. Do it! DO EEEET!
