@br00t4c Ah yes, blame the big bad Chinese for...exploiting the penchant for businesses to cut costs by offshoring industry.

WTF is this article.

Pet stores (and indeed, all forms of buying and selling animals) should be illegal imo. I can see the case for rehoming shelter animals and abandoned pets as a best-case scenario in our current world, but even that perversely depends on enough people buying into this notion of animals as objects to be used and discarded.

Even if you're not vegan, I think it's safe to say that we can all agree that the conditions around factory farming are abhorrent: livestock living in their own feces, pumped full of antibiotics and growth hormones, and fundamentally only as useful as their product (meat, dairy, or eggs). But these horrific practices stem from an attitude towards animals: they are factories to produce what we want and which we can "optimize" however we see fit.

(2/?)

chiraag,
@chiraag@mastodon.online avatar

Even free-range chickens and grass-fed cows are only as useful as their products, right? Though it may technically be more humane than the baseline, the fundamental attitude hasn't shifted. They're still viewed as factories, albeit ones we should take better care of.

(3/?)

chiraag,
@chiraag@mastodon.online avatar

Tackling that attitude is uncomfortable, I'm not going to lie. I grew up vegetarian and was told the lie that the dairy industry doesn't hurt the cow. No matter the fact that male calves are culled immediately because they're "useless" (there's that attitude again!) or that the cows are living in squalid conditions. Let's ignore the fact that sometimes the milking machines malfunction and the udders start bleeding. No, we're not harming any cows!

(4/?)

chiraag,
@chiraag@mastodon.online avatar

The fact of the matter is that as soon as cow's milk became a commodity, cows became factories. Need more milk? Let's forcibly impregnate our cows. Male calf? Useless. Female calf? Let it have the minimum amount of milk (every drop it drinks is a drop we can't sell) and impregnate it as soon as we can (needs to start generating revenue). The egg industry isn't much better.

If this is uncomfortable for you, good! It's okay to be uncomfortable.

(5/?)

chiraag,
@chiraag@mastodon.online avatar

It is okay to be uncomfortable with the attitudes and choices that go into that glass of milk. It means you actually care about animals. So act on it.

Don't look away just because it's uncomfortable. Don't willingly blind yourself to the suffering that goes into that milk, yogurt, cheese, eggs, and meat.

We willingly exploit mothers of others species because the product "tastes good".

(6/?)

chiraag,
@chiraag@mastodon.online avatar

This mother's day, make a choice to stop exploiting animal mothers. Their suffering isn't worth all the delicious food in the world.

I want to end this by saying that I know the transition is tough. Once I decided I would go vegan, it took me almost 5-6 years to actually do it. I made sure I wasn't losing anything nutritionally (main concern).

(7/?)

chiraag,
@chiraag@mastodon.online avatar

I could no longer eat my favorite dessert (gulab jamun), at least not in restaurants. I could no longer eat naan (they add milk to it), at least not in restaurants. Most desserts are off-limits for me (I gave up egg almost immediately, so that one has been true for a long time for me), even at other people's houses (and I don't feel good mentioning it unless it's just us coming over).

(8/?)

chiraag,
@chiraag@mastodon.online avatar

But it's worth it. The fact that I'm not exploiting other animals feels good, and realizing how many products have animal exploitation built in (and how embedded it is in so many cultures) has been eye-opening.

It can definitely feel very hard, but keeping the reasons in mind can make it easier. Finding a community (IRL or online) can make it easier.

Note to WFPB folks: don't use 100% emmer wheat flour to make tortillas/chapatis unless you're okay with using oil to prevent it from sticking. We normally eat WFPB but I had to use some coconut oil (the only type we have lying around) on my hands and on the ball itself to prevent it from sticking even to ziploc(!).

Hopefully a blend is okay (I guess I'll find out soon!).

Hamas members shoot at the legs of Gaza residents who they describe as "thieves", leaving them abandoned in the Khan Yunis area.

@opethminded @Free_Press Yes, Hamas has to go. No, bombing the everloving fuck out of all of Palestine and killing tons of civilians will not achieve that and only breeds resentment.

You cannot bomb Hamas out of existence because it rose to prominence due to perceived neglect of Palestinian rights by the previous ruling party. Want Hamas out? Agitate for ending Israeli apartheid.

The solar eclipse inspired our new puzzle design! It's double-sided: the sun on one side and the moon on the other. By flipping pieces over, you can gradually eclipse the sun turning day to night https://n-e-r-v-o-u-s.com/blog/?p=9636

The Eclipse puzzle assembled to to show the sun eclipsed halfway
The Eclipse puzzle assembled to to show the sun eclipsed 3/4 of the way

European intelligence agencies have warned their governments that is plotting violent acts of sabotage across the continent as it commits to a course of permanent conflict with the west.

Russia has already begun to more actively prepare covert bombings, arson attacks and damage to infrastructure on European soil, directly and via proxies, with little apparent concern about causing civilian fatalities, intelligence officials believe.

@hanse_mina I'm always slightly skeptical of intelligence officials, mostly b/c they have a bad habit (at least here in the US) of using threats (real and imagined) to justify expanding police powers and surveillance.

WFPB carrot paratha!

Pretty easy:

  • 1 lb (16 oz) whole wheat flour (I used mostly black emmer with some Turkey red, I think)
  • 2 oz tahini
  • 1 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1.5 lb carrots grated
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  1. Mix all dough ingredients up to carrots in one bowl
  2. Mix grated carrots with 1/2 tsp salt in a separate bowl
  3. Slowly add salted grated carrots to other dough ingredients and keep mixing (easiest to do by hand).

I wonder if much of the U.S. campus unrest about might be deliberately whipped up by and other social media algorithms to soften support for among young voters.

(My own position is that is utterly responsible for the October 7th atrocities. However, has stupidly fallen into their trap. is creating orders of magnitude more terrorists than they're killing. Today's Gaza children will grow up with seething hatred and thirst for revenge.)

Your thoughts?

chiraag,
@chiraag@mastodon.online avatar

@ArtSmart Nah. People are fed up with backing a genocide. We don't need TikTok propaganda to tell us what we can see with our own eyes and hear with our own ears. We don't need propaganda to know that Genocide Joe has stood by Bibi the Butcher and provided him the weapons to massacre Palestinians.

Not everything has to connect back to a Russian or Chinese conspiracy. Sometimes awful people are held accountable for doing awful things.
