Pro Tips:

  • stay near the conference venue, within walking distance (15 minutes max)
  • watch the talks and keynotes
  • but you don't have to watch ALL the talks. Take breaks
  • meet new people at hallway track, join new table at breakfast/lunch, introduce yourself
  • prepare an"elevator pitch" about yourself
  • don't need to pack too many shirts. Get t-shirt swag at sponsor booths at the expo hall (and socks)
  • sprint
  • volunteer
  • tell everyone you know to come!

Any other tips?

@mariatta http://harihareswara.net/posts/2023/your-first-pycon-but-not-your-first-convention/ I wrote some tips for people who have been to other conventions but not PyCon yet

@brainwane this is a great article and I agree with everything you wrote there! 💯

@mariatta I try to bring an easy way to record ideas, thoughts, and crucially follow-ups to the many quick discussions I have over the course of the conference. It's a whirlwind and you get tons of energy, but what matters most is what you do after everyone's gone home: hard to remember it all without a record!

@sethmlarson 💯 Yes! For me, "live tooting/live-tweeting" is my way to record things, as well as taking photos and selfies with people I met. I also bring my laptop along and write short notes of talks i've seen.

@mariatta Great tips!

I shared some of my tips on my blog on how we can all make the conference a better experience for each other.

One pick for this thread: the "pacman rule", meaning when you stand in groups having a chat, make sure there's an opening for a new person to join.

@mariatta I can't recall who I heard this from, but:
meet one new person for each year you've been attending PyCon.

@bengerman 💯 That's the "Snowball rule" which is like the sequel to the pacman rule

@mariatta

  • sign up for a lightning talk (start coming up with a catchy title)
  • visit one of the open spaces
  • better yet, host your own open space based on something that interests you
