Only one can exist!

@djlink If I pick Nintendo, basically, the only viable operating system will be Linux.

Which could be fantastic! Open OS by default! But only if it can get over the fragmentation issue. I've tried Linux a whole bunch of times and every time it has been a nightmare and it's so difficult to learn because all the distros and configurations.

I really dislike macOS and Windows. macOS phases out compatibility before I can write this toot and Windows is a privacy nightmare.

I want Linux to be viable

araly,

@Nifflas @djlink i've been using linux for years, and the fragmentation was an issue when i started.

but i don't think it's a problem anymore, especially for the vast majority of the population's use of a computer. you can just use flatpak and nothing else and every linux has flatpak nowadays

@araly @djlink Flatpak looks pretty cool. And honestly, it was long since I tried Linux, I'm curious how things have changed. Back when I used it last, a lot of the software I wanted to use were only available as "compile it yourself" which required Linux knowledge I simply didn't have.

The other problem I had when I tried it more recently is there was always some part of my hardware there weren't working drivers for. Maybe just bad luck on my end tho. I'm up for giving it another go.

araly,

@Nifflas @djlink the only place where "compile it yourself" is still applicable is if you want a very very specific build of something. even all my devtools now are packaged in all the ways.

but now especially with the rise of immutable distros like the steam deck, everything's on flatpak anyways

@araly Sounds promising! \o/ I'm willing to give Linux another try!

araly,

@Nifflas @djlink drivers missing should just be a case of "hardware is recent, need a newer kernel", which most distros should make easy. that part could be easier though, maybe by first scanning your hardware and giving the option installing the proper kernel ?

@araly That's one thing that is tricky about Linux tho. I had no idea I was meant to do that. I certainly didn't manage to find that out back when I had this problem, and I googled a lot for solutions. Most solutions I found were typing stuff into the terminal, none of which worked X) I think this experience made me bounce of Linux hard.

Again, this was years ago. I'll give it another try soon and see if it's easier now! :)

@djlink this one was easy 😂

@djlink that poll is so incredibly dystopian, I would feel dirty clicking on anything even near it...

@djlink Microsoft because most compatible with Linux environment (GitHub, Wine/Steam, Linux kernel compatible hardware, MSVC).
Maybe Apple for developing WebKit and supporting Unix shells / Clang.
Not sure why someone would select Google.
Nintendo buys hardware from other vendors (e. g. IBM) and creates closed DRM systems for playing games while illegalizing emulators.

@djlink Do they have to?
