Review for Pengo on game Gear.
Sega Force 4 - April 1992 (UK)

I have to add that I feel they are being a bit too harsh on Pengo here.
Although I understand since the game was a decade old by the time it released on Game Gear.

I loved it in the arcade and it was actually my first GG game. 😊
I love the game so much that I have the Japanese MD, Xbox 360 and Switch versions as well.

@OutofPrintArchive if you loved Pengo, you should try Waimanu (available for the SMS or the Nintendo DS or GBA here:

Oh no. Naming problem, the bane of programming. A class detects one of two things, depending on the mode. In one mode, it detects if a point is right of a line. In another mode, it checks if a point is inside a circle. It's used for checkpoints where both are useful ways to define when a checkpoint should be triggered, depending on the checkpoint.

I need a variable name for a bool which signals whether this is true or not - that works for both modes.

sverx,
@sverx@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Nifflas I don't know what language you're using but you can probably use two different names for the same code and have a good name for your bool in each situation...

It turns out there's a #SEGA #Genesis / #MegaDrive inside some specific TecToy #MasterSystem 3 Collection model. 🤯

More info as soon as I get them, or you can join #SMSPower! discord server and follow the current development yourself!

The TecToy Master System 3 Collection

sverx,
@sverx@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

It's a MD-on-a-chip (SOC) and there's some Flash memory where the console menu (a #Genesis ROM) and the 120 #MasterSystem games are stored.

Uploading a Genesis game ROM into the Flash where the menu was seems to be all that's needed to boot into a Genesis ROM.

sverx,
@sverx@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

Also on the PCB there's a footprint for an SMS slot where you can actually solder a slot and use it to run SMS games!

sverx,
@sverx@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

Interestingly enough, it seems their later models aren't made this way. The 132-games Master System Evolution for instance has been analyzed recently and its menu is a Master System ROM instead.

https://segaretro.org/Master_System_Evolution

But the 2007 131-games version (also called #MasterSystem 3 Collection) could instead have the same hardware as this 2006 one. Will investigate later too.

https://segaretro.org/Master_System_3_Collection_(2007)

sverx,
@sverx@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

Running the SMS Test Suite confirms what we clearly already knew, it's a MegaDrive.

sverx,
@sverx@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

... and another friend just confirmed my hypothesis: the 2007 '131-in-1' #MasterSystem 3 Collection is indeed the same hardware, a #SEGA #Genesis -on-a-chip 😁

sverx,
@sverx@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

Regarding the 120 games, it (unexpectedly!) turned out some of them are Genesis/MegaDrive ROMs 😲 , instead of being #MasterSystem games.

They are:

  • A Ponte
  • Air Hockey
  • Anaconda
  • Aniversário
  • Asa Delta
  • Batalha Naval
  • Bil Bolha
  • Blocos Mágicos
  • Caça Palavras
  • Canhão
  • Corrida da Pesada
  • Corrida de Tampinhas
  • Encanamento
  • Faroeste
  • Força Alienígena
  • Guerra dos Monstros
  • Lance Livre
  • Mexe Mexe Tupi
  • Mosaico
  • Natação
  • Pedreiro Polar
  • Zôo

well this is unexpected, I recently switched to Firefox to escape this shift to AI in the other browsers and will you look at that, Firefox is scaling back on VPN and Relay and investing into AI on the browser. Oh well https://techcrunch.com/2024/02/13/mozilla-downsizes-as-it-refocuses-on-firefox-and-ai-read-the-memo/

Not only should you get a #browser that offers anti-tracking protection (or a tracker blocker extension), but one that cares about you and doesn’t spy on your browsing habits. In the end, blocking trackers is almost pointless if you are using a browser that collects far more details than any tracking ad ever could.

At Vivaldi we believe what you do online is your business. We don't profile you, nor share or sell information to any third party.

it's so much insanely slower to drag the contents (1st pic) of a zip archive instead of pressing "extract all" (2nd). Like I know dragging involves another copy operation from temp but still. There must be some weird code in there

image/png

sverx,
@sverx@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@djlink if you drag the contents I suspect under the hood it's sending a list of files to be extracted, which might be implemented as a loop for all the entries, seek to file, decompress to temp...

extract all to some folder on the other hand is probably just sequentially reading the input zip and deflating to destination folder directly

Finally available the DOS version of Simulgolf, the second game by Italian software house Simulmondo and, also, one of the first Italian DOS games ever made.
AFAIK this has never been available on the internet before.
Thanks to Luca who digitized it from the original floppies.
