The origin of semlor:

Swedes were shown a delicious French cream puff and challenged to create their own cultural cuisine icon.

They took the same ingredients, baked a plain dinner roll, cut the top third off, piled bland whipped cream and a squirt of almond paste for a hint of flavor in between the slices, sprinkled some sugar on top, and yelled, “Nailed it!” to a bemused Nicole Byer and Jacques Torres.

Nicole Byer and Jacques Torres on show Nailed It sitting at desk. Nicole leans over with questioning face. Jacques slaps hand on table in confusion.

@Jeremiah Born and raised here and I also never understood the hype. The taste is fine if there's not too much almond paste, but they're a pain in the ass to eat either way. Not worth the mess imo.

Just for a balanced view, I should mention that, IMO, there is no such thing as “too much almond paste” when it comes to semlor. It is one of the topics that divide this country.

Agree that they are not designed to be eaten, but I guess once a year is acceptable.
