I need book recommendations for something I won't be able to put down.

I enjoy suspense, but not gore, multigenerational novels, autobiographies, time travelish books, but not science fiction, historical fiction, & some fantasy.

So, what ya' got for me?

@Saltssaltgirl I'm giving Braiding Sweetgrass a read. It's a kind of autobiography by Robin Wall Kimmerer, an professor and member of the Potawatomi tribal nation. She writes about growing up a rural kid immersed in the natural world but without much awareness of her roots, gravitating to the sciences as a young adult, then rediscovering her roots and forms of Indigenous ecological knowledge. On the lighter side, anything by Carl Hiassen.

@BrunoMcGee this looks awesome!
And Carl Hiassen is great!

@Saltssaltgirl If you like fantasy then you may enjoy the Raksura series by Martha Wells. The first book is The Cloud Roads. I'm not usually into fantasy but this has become one of my favorites. It's a very creative take on some fantasy tropes, like magic and magical creatures. The main characters aren't humans - in fact, there aren't any humans per se in this world. There are innumerable humanoid species, and many sentient non-humanoid species as well. Our main character can shape-shift between a human looking form and basically a bipedal dragon form--with scales, wings, a tail, spines, claws, sharp teeth. Themes: found family, trauma, figuring out who you are. It's great. I hope you check it out. :)

@SallyStrange sounds really good. I’ll add the series to my list. Thank you!

@Saltssaltgirl how's about these?:

Life After Life, by Kate Atkinson (historical time-travel novel)
Ducks, by Kate Beaton (autobiographical graphic novel)
Bathing the Lion, by Jonathan Carroll (bizarre suspense-ish fantasy, very hard to classify)

I'm loving the other suggestions! glad you're finding stuff that looks good.

@datn thank you for the suggestions. Life After Life is exactly what I’m looking for!

@Saltssaltgirl May not meet your requirements, but what a sweetheart of a book. Especially for kids that just don’t fit in.

Saltssaltgirl,
@Saltssaltgirl@mas.to avatar

@AmishSuperModel well, I will definitely read it.

@Saltssaltgirl Two names:
T. Kingfisher aka Ursula Vernon
Ilona Andrews

Ursula's Paladin books are both insightful and hilarious. Probably the two Ilona Andrews series I'd suggest first are the Kate Daniels series if you like the idea of weres in a world where magic is returning at the expense of technology, or the Innkeeper series if ... well, actually I'm not sure how to best describe that. :) But it's different than most.

@zakalwe oh these sound great! Thank you!

@Saltssaltgirl

You ever read any Terry Pratchett? "Good Omens", "Nightwatch", or "Men at Arms" are good places to start. "Good Omens" tells the story of how the forces of hell botch the apocalypse.

The Discworld books don't need to be read in order, if there is backstory you need, Pratchett will give it to you in the current book.
