So… if they’re gonna dump staff who’re trying to unionize. I have my music sitting on computers in my house, 400GB in Apple lossless, I have a fast Internet connection (firewalled of course), I wanna be able to do “shuffle all songs” or "shuffle Miles Davis" while I’m driving or walking around out in the world.

Anyone out there actually done this? [Don’t wanna be rude but would prefer to avoid answers of the “this should work” flavor.]

@timbray Finally found time to write up how I use Plex + Plexamp. Thanks for asking (the world) and prompting me to actually write the words

@fastchicken @timbray I’ve got a similar setup. I just wish the “sonic analysis” feature wasn’t so slow. It takes multiple months to complete on my library on a fast-ish PC. I had to restore from a backup, lost it, and am just giving up on the feature.

@bergmayer @timbray do you have a GPU available? That speeds most things up….

timbray,
@timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

@fastchicken I should note that I went the UPnP route, because Plex just auto-magically set that all up. The UPnP security history is not exactly flawless, I need to check out how bad it is in 2024. I like the idea of using Tailscale though.

@timbray I have too many Aliexpress-sourced IOT devices to leave upnp turned on.

Realistically not THAT big a risk, but it’s easy enough to disable and work around these days

So, big thanks to all the people who had useful things to say about that ⬆️ question. Have discovered two ways to hear my music in the car:

  1. Plex. It basically Just Worked (even set up all the right UPnP voodoo itself).
  2. Dump the music on a USB stick, car is happy to play it.

Both UXes feel a little clumsy compared to YTM but that’s probably at least partly because I’m not used to them.

Next step: Investigate TIDAL and other streaming services…

@timbray
Also good for on the go: Sony NW-A306 + 1 TB micro SD card.
This obviously also works with some mobile phones, but I like the device and pretend I can hear the quality.
I also started buying music again. Uncompressed on CD, Bandcamp, and Qobuz.

@timbray I asked a friend who wrote the popular MinimServer and MinimStreamer and he wrote:

MinimServer is for use with music on a local network. MinimStreamer can access internet radio streams.

@timbray

Neither MinimServer nor MinimStreamer provides remote access to a home library. There are other programs that can do this in conjunction with MinimServer (for example, BubbleUPnPServer and BubbleUPnP) but this combination could be tricky to configure and would require an Android phone to run BubbleUPnP. I haven't tried doing this myself as I don't want to open any inbound internet connections to my home network.

Here is an example of such a setup for Android and QNAP: https://forum.minimserver.com/showthread.php?tid=7125

@timbray I've used 2 approaches before:

1.- Use Mixxx to generate the playlist/mix and then stream it with Icecast.

2.- Create a playlist and stream it with VLC using http.

With option 1 you would have a full-featured internet radio station at your disposal which you could use to DJ at party as well. It is more fun, but you need to setup an Icecast server, which I do in Virtualbox VM.

Option 2 is just working in a couple of clicks.

amart,

@timbray 1 problem with Apple Music Match is it doesn’t upload your tracks if it thinks it has better versions and sometimes your tracks then go away when licensing changes
2 problem with USB solution on some cars is the reading of large USB sticks can take many minutes
3 you may want to check out jriver media center - it’s very mature and supposedly if you leave the server running at home you can access it remotely

@timbray You've gotten lots of suggestions, but wondering if @mrcompletely or @bourgwick has anything to add.

@sbourne @timbray @bourgwick I'm not apple savvy anymore sorry

chrisn,

@timbray i got a USB stick and plugged that into my car. Saves the trouble of networking issues, and as a bonus, an extra backup of my music.

(My collection is smaller though)

timbray,

@chrisn D'oh, the car has multiple USB slots, I will totally give that a try. It's a couple years since I bought a USB stick, I suppose 500G is nothing special these days.

@thinkpad Ewww, WebDav, I have happily not thought about that for at least a decade. Also, server is a Mac. But will have a close look at that, thanks.

@timbray Plex and Plexamp. Does all this and more.

Tailscale if you REALLY don’t want to open a port.

Crispius,

@timbray this sounds very much like what I’m currently doing through Apple Music; in addition to accessing the Apple Music streamed content, I can also stream from my iTunes library. Then in the app I can choose to play particular artists or album or genre.

timbray,
@timbray@cosocial.ca avatar

@Crispius Hmm, I wonder how this gets along with Android Auto in the car…

johannab,
@johannab@cosocial.ca avatar

@timbray @Crispius I’m also currently an Apple Music subscriber, but for years just synced devices and ran either a cable or BT into the car. If spouse is using Android Auto, i can just connect via BT, reverse if my phone’s doing the driving.
