@mangeurdenuage this shit pisses me off so much. electric stoves suck ass!!! induction stoves are a bit better but developers will never spend the extra money to put them in
@Moon@animeirl@mangeurdenuage he's not anti lgbt he's a trans excluding radfem and his comics have lesbians featured prominently. t. o used to read his strip. he's primarily anti porn, not anti "gender ideology".
@georgia@Moon@mangeurdenuage he's a cookie cutter "anti-woke" activist now. all lgbt people want to rape your children, (((they))) are flooding the country with immigrants, etc.
@georgia@animeirl@mangeurdenuage My perception is that a lot of gender-critical people are drifting into fairly far right wing stuff. This isn't without precedent, in the 80s the radfems partnered with conservative christians to try to get porn banned in the USA and Canada.
@Moon@georgia@mangeurdenuage while GC ideology rhetoric has its roots in lesbian feminism the vast majority are generic social conservatives. hence jk rowling promoting pro child marriage guys like matt walsh despite her whole thing supposedly being about protecting the children
@animeirl@Moon@georgia@mangeurdenuage Out of curiosity, where did JK Rowling promote Matt Walsh? That one surprises me because she is a leftist feminist.
@sim@Moon@georgia@mangeurdenuage shes retweeted him on twitter a couple times i havent really paid attention to her much since she wrote that incredibly disingenuous open letter
@sim@georgia@Moon@animeirl@mangeurdenuage tbf uk politics seem to be shitfest. no idea if there is any left or right wing public person with a shred of integrity. from an outsiders perspective it seems to be more and more like american politics. a struggle for power and relevance only.
jkr did support labor party in the past and hold up mostly leftish views. though since a decade or so i think i only hear from her for radical anti trans views. (extreme as in there is no wiggle room for discussion or any kind of compromise, i would consider someone being just afraid of trans people or not understanding them not necessarily as radical. in her case it seems she is only satisfied when trans people will stop coming out.)
@grillchen@georgia@Moon@mangeurdenuage@sim she may still technically hold those views but she's willing to compromise or completely ignore them for the sake of gender culture war stuff.
@animeirl@georgia@Moon@mangeurdenuage@sim kinda sad on a personal level. she could have fun with her money and platform and instead she chooses to hate random people....
@grillchen@georgia@Moon@animeirl@mangeurdenuage She has been political on her platform for as long as I can remember. She gave a lot of her money to charity to support causes important to her rather than having fun (Or maybe that is fun to her). When you know her past, I don't see how she can behave differently given that she is a domestic abuse survivor I guess the term would be. She supports females. As for having fun, I think she'd likely get cancelled for that too. The writing industry is not very forgiving right now. I don't see how she'd behave differently in the current climate. I'm surprised she took the stand she has though, but maybe I shouldn't have been given her past.
@sim@grillchen@Moon@georgia@mangeurdenuage JK Rowling's stated goal is to protect women, and Walsh wants to make it easier to abuse them, so no, if thats your actual goal empowering someone who's goals are diametrically opposed to your own is not how you get stuff done which is why I don't think she's actually left wing or progressive any more. She's more interested in combating "transgenderism" even if it's at the expense of what she claims/used to claim to care about
@grillchen@georgia@Moon@animeirl@mangeurdenuage Yes, we are downstream of America. Whatever has colonised America has also colonised us, we have close ties and borrow ideas that have taken root in America. Especially with how close our academics are and how people migrate over here from the US to do things. Other countries in the west are just behind or not as immersed yet... but that is likely to change unless America changes course. Also, what is British has been heavily attacked and not passed down in the education system, we have lost a lot of community things that uphold our culture, there are fewer chances to learn in our every day lives what makes one British. You have to actively search for it, look old videos or culture up.
But isn't that the problem with how the news or social media cycle is now in part? We only get to hear the controversies, the bad news cycle whichever side we're on. I don't know that this says much about the people these articles are about, especially when we know that they often have a biased narrative to tell against someone for clicks and the algo feeds us certain news. Whenever I know more about a topic, the lies or ignorance becomes more apparent to me. Especially when I read articles about the fediverse for example.
> I believe the majority of trans-identified people not only pose zero threat to others, but are vulnerable for all the reasons I’ve outlined. Trans people need and deserve protection. Like women, they’re most likely to be killed by sexual partners. Trans women who work in the sex industry, particularly trans women of colour, are at particular risk. Like every other domestic abuse and sexual assault survivor I know, I feel nothing but empathy and solidarity with trans women who’ve been abused by men.
@mangeurdenuage@Moon@animeirl@georgia I haven't paid much attention to her in the past few months... did something happen? Did she announce that she was no longer a leftist or something? Did she stop being a feminist and supporting females or stop supporting gay or black people? She has a track record in supporting those groups or causes. Also, I don't think it is fair to say that she isn't a leftist because of her views on trans people. This is shifting the Overton Window and alienating leftists. I'm not sure they should have to tow the line on every new trend to be in the club.
@Moon@animeirl@georgia@mangeurdenuage Seriously? Is that where we are heading now in our discourse? You can't talk across the political divide without that association? We are screwed if so.
@sim@Moon@georgia@mangeurdenuage i don't think this is an accurate description of what JRK is doing. There's "talking across the isle" and then there's claiming your primary issue is the safety of women and girls while promoting a guy who thinks women are property and wants to legalize child abuse.
@animeirl@sim@Moon@georgia@mangeurdenuage How familiar is she with him? From what I gather she was an old suffragette type that didn't know how to read the room, so to speak. I don't think most know who he is unless they're deep in the internet USpol weeds.
Matt Walsh is a greaseball, though, that's for sure.
@mrsaturday@Moon@georgia@mangeurdenuage@sim I'm not sure I would trust what she said anyway, since like most people on both sides of this public "debate" on gender, she's proven to be incredibly disingenuous
@Moon@sim@georgia@mangeurdenuage "I'm a left wing progressive who cares about women and racial minorities but you really should listen to and support this guy who thinks women are baby making machines who should get married and have children by 16"
