Why is Windows so bad at basic file operations? Isn't this supposed to be a Disk Operating System? Copying files is slow and unpredictable. Canceling file copies are bizarrely slow. If a file is added to a directory, I have to manually refresh for Windows Explorer to notice.

There is, in my downloads folder, a file named "2019-07-02 gutenberg.org.tar.part". I don't remember downloading this. Windows claims it to be several hundred gigabytes larger than my hard drive.

@mcc and it's getting worse. When the company I work at switched from Windows 10 to 11, I noticed Windows Explorer got much more prone to freezing, and many operations are much slower

MTP, which appears to be the only away to USB-copy files off my phone without rooting it, is so slow I'm convinced it will just never finish. Currently looking into network-based backup utilities because Microsoft apparently can't handle "copy a file over usb"

the_wiggler,

@mcc Wasnt this some stupid copyright conflict? Early android had native usb mass storage and i remeber there was a big thing about it abd it got removed and replace with mtp.

@mcc I once decided to just dig into the underlying APIs to write my own tool to copy files off my phone, and it just made me angry. It's terrible nonsense.

I gave up and instead use syncthing. Copying files over usb is just too hard

@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@foone This is encouraging to know because I'm currently setting up SyncThing.

On a cursory search I found lots of people going "it's easy! you just set up an rsync server on your phone! download [link to one of 3 rsync server apps which apparently existed in 2012 but are no longer on the Play store]

roytoo,

@mcc @foone
I've also been using SyncThing with good success.

the_arto,
@the_arto@jorts.horse avatar

@roytoo @mcc @foone Could have sworn that like 10 years ago android phones just mounted as USB mass storage devices.

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@the_arto @roytoo @mcc yeah they used to. we switched to MTP to solve some problems like users yanking the USB cable out without unmounting, and microsoft refusing to implement an ext3 driver

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@the_arto @roytoo @foone Well, now they mount as MTP volumes. Which Teracopy is not compatible with. And Windows is, tonight, interacting with slower than I've ever seen it do.

@wademcgillis@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc this is why i always buy a cell phone with an sd card slot

it's so much faster

beeoproblem,
@beeoproblem@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@mcc I used to work at a cell phone OEM. From what I remember when MTP dropped as a thing the USB dev team weren't fans of the protocol

Unfortunately it's been so long I forgot the details

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@beeoproblem I feel like I've used it before and did not have problems, or at least not this bad

beeoproblem,
@beeoproblem@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@mcc fair. Their grumbles may have been due to being annoying to implement rather than fundamentally janky but it's been the better part of 20 years since that was going on.

It feels like regular file transfer is being slowly buried in favor of various flavors of "cloud"

allpurposemat,
@allpurposemat@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@mcc how else would you actually do this? I'm on Linux and I gave up on MTP, but adb pull is quite hard to use (have to know the path to my actual user storage, use the command line, etc...).

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

Okay I think I eventually figured it out but in my opinion the UX for syncthing could use some improvement

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

This said Syncthing is at least two orders of magnitude faster than Windows MTP copy, and has the advantage that without interrupting the transfer I can unplug from the computer and go into my bedroom and read Alastair Reynolds ebooks

achilleas,
@achilleas@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc I've been running SyncThing on everything (including phone) for years and it's never failed me. It just silently sits there doing its thing. I've reached the point where I will drop something in a synced directory on the PC and walk away with my phone trusting that it's there without needing to check.

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

Oh, Alastair… you're so droll

frontsideair,
@frontsideair@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc I was convinced that MTP is a conspiracy so people don't pirate music back in the day, but I don't remember why I believe this at all.

@mcc Is that snip from Diamond Dogs?

Fun coincidence! I just checked out Inhibitor Phase from the library and haven’t read one of his books in 20 years. Been enjoying it quite a bit!

CliftonR,
@CliftonR@wandering.shop avatar

@DJTentMode @mcc

I happened to have recently read it - it's 'Aurora Rising', the first of the Prefect Dreyfus books.

I enjoyed it considerably more than I remember liking his earlier books. They weren't bad, but this one grabbed me more.

DJTentMode,
@DJTentMode@mstdn.party avatar

@CliftonR @mcc I read that one, but I think it was just “The Prefect” when I did.

TomF,
@TomF@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@DJTentMode @CliftonR @mcc Heh - I have liked pretty much all his books, even if some of them are kinda tough. Don't remember him doing humour/satire before - but it's good! One more to add to the list!

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@TomF @DJTentMode @CliftonR I run hot and cold on him. I feel like he has the problem some hard sci fi authors have of like, just kind of only sometimes bothering to include character writing. When he's good though he's really good

@mcc Made the mistake of downloading and extracting a GitHub repository with tonnes of SVG icons.

The resulting folder was an enigma to Windows Explorer. I couldn't delete or move it and it was tediously slow to traverse it's contents.
