Okay, so, podcasts are great but sometimes I prefer to read instead of listen. 🤔

So what if – hear me out – there was a thing like podcasts, but for text! 🤯

It would still be distributed via RSS, you could still follow them and automagically pull them to your device. But instead of audio, there would be text. ✏️

👉 We could call them: textcasts!

And get this: I already have one! It was super easy to set up, actually. You can find it here:

I've added your textcasts feed (blog 😉 ) to my RSS reader. Slowly going through your older posts and looking forward to new posts when you make them.

@rysiek posted a great fandom mashup photo for May the 4th here:
https://mstdn.social/@rysiek/112380636158676013

It had lots of great comments and this one by @FantasmitaAsex :
https://todon.eu/@FantasmitaAsex/112381784685457733
caught my eye and inspired me to try to add in the missing Babylon 5 and Doctor Who they mentioned.
Been a long time since I tried any serious photo editing but it came out pretty good (other than the plastic packaging).

I talked to my students about the war in Gaza and asked about the climate on campus. They were saying that people were so entrenched and they were confused about who was who and why and all that. They mostly don't have clear opinions. They seem to think they are expected to have strong opinions. There have been very few protests on campus that I'm aware of. Some pop-up displays about both sides of the issue. That's it.

@rjblaskiewicz
Our 7th grade daughter asked Wednesday at dinner, "Aren't we supposed to be on [redacted]'s side?"
It prompted a good discussion as a family about how nuanced (and confusing) the current and historic situation is for Israel and Palestine.
We were pleasantly surprised that our 10th grader had been reading news about it on her own and already realized beforehand it was a not a clear cut situation.
Not unexpectedly both said no one is discussing it in classes or at school.

Apparently someone RTed this tonight so I have done so as well but now I am going to embellish the RT with a quick note to say this is one of my favorite jokes ever done on this quantum multiwebsite and you should follow the delightful Ms. McFlurry if you don't already.

Why is Windows so bad at basic file operations? Isn't this supposed to be a Disk Operating System? Copying files is slow and unpredictable. Canceling file copies are bizarrely slow. If a file is added to a directory, I have to manually refresh for Windows Explorer to notice.

There is, in my downloads folder, a file named "2019-07-02 gutenberg.org.tar.part". I don't remember downloading this. Windows claims it to be several hundred gigabytes larger than my hard drive.

Dental crowns are one of those things that seem much more sophisticated than they are. They grind your tooth down to nothing and then glue a fake one on top.

roytoo,
@roytoo@mstdn.social avatar

@LouisIngenthron
Ouch!
My wisdom teeth were actually extracted using a clamp device (vice-grips?). I don't know exactly what the tool was because it was covered with a sterile cloth when I walked in. And they also covered my eyes with a sterile cloth "to protect them from possible debris". I know they just didn't want me to see them coming at me with vice-grips! 😃
@andrew

roytoo,
@roytoo@mstdn.social avatar

@LouisIngenthron
The first three extractions went well. But on the fourth and final one the tooth fell out of the clamp and into the back of my throat. Thankfully my tongue automatically pressed it against the roof of my mouth so I didn't inhale it.
The dentist made panicked sounds but the assistant had the sense to grab me and set me upright as I gagged on the tooth. I coughed it out and heard it ricochet off the wall and across the tile floor.
@andrew

roytoo,
@roytoo@mstdn.social avatar

@LouisIngenthron
Then I started laughing as I imagined the panicked look on the dentist's face.
They laid me back in the chair and finished up. When they uncovered my eyes I was still chuckling occasionally and the dentist was nowhere to be seen. I explained to the assistant why I was laughing still but they didn't find it humorous.
@andrew

roytoo,
@roytoo@mstdn.social avatar

@andrew
Yeah, had that done recently as too.
There was some real artistry in matching the crown to the real teeth colors. But a lot of it felt like body work on a car with simple techniques dinner well.

roytoo,
@roytoo@mstdn.social avatar

@andrew
"CEREC crown" is an interesting term so I looked it up. Very cool that they can make it that quickly.
Mine had to be made by offsite dental technician so it took about a week. They did mold and make a temp crown for me the save day they ground down the original tooth though.

Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that's diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge women's equality.

Collectively we can all .

Celebrate women's achievement. Raise awareness about discrimination. Take action to drive gender parity.

That's for sharing this Micheal.
I learned a lot from it and now understand much better how badly I misread and misunderstood the situation when folks here were reacting negatively to Taylor's post about the article and interview.
Going forward I'll make myself ask:
Did this article about a trans person centering the trans person and their community?
If not, who is it centering and why?

I sat down with Chaya Raichik of LibsofTikTok to talk about Nex's death, her role in Oklahoma politics, her beliefs on gender, the great replacement theory, sex education, her false accusations against the Uvalde shooter, why she and Seth Dillon cut ties and more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XL-40gDBRx0&t=2359s

Read my latest story on her impact in Oklahoma: https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2024/02/24/libs-tiktok-oklahoma-nonbinary-teen-death/

I'm curious what you're objecting to in the reporting.

I read though the entire article and it is not favorable to Chaya Raichik or LibsOfTikTok in anyway that I could see.
Explicitly quoting domeone that Chaya makes posts to incite her followers and then deletes them afterwards is good reporting to me.
Quote is in next post.

I've Finished: Titanium Noir by Nick Harkaway

I like the Noir Detective trope and I love SF&F.

This is an SF story about a world where the rich are semi-immortal as well as physically powerful, as a result of the rejuvenation process.

For most of the novel, it seems like the only concession to Sci-Fi is making the power of the billionaires more obvious. However as the chips finally start falling down, the payoff is very well done, and leverages many aspects of the T7 rejuvenation process.

Started Tloto Tsamaase's Womb City this afternoon and it goes HARD. Like Richard K. Morgan and Margaret Atwood made an IVF baby, raised it in an artificial womb but then the government decided to confiscate the embryo for its own dark purposes. Holy shit!

It will be out in September 2024 and is available for preorder. More info on Catherine's Patreon post:

One of my daughters is a DM for her school's D&D group. She's mentioned several times that the players in her group always blame anything bad that happens on rust monsters since they had a really bad experience with rust monsters in an earlier campaign.
That inspired me to make this modification of the "it's aliens" meme:
