me: i'm going to move to a warm place! it'll be nice, i'll be able to spend so much more time outdoors!

me in the warm place, inside with curtains drawn to keep the heat and desert dust out, getting less sun than ever: what the fuck

@eniko Ah yeah you overshot and ended up in a bleeding hot place

I rag on github a whole lot, but this is one feature it has that I really like.

Since JiaT75 backdoored xz-utils, I have blocked him and now get to see a warning in every project he touched.

I hope wasmtime et all are doing some careful review..

@joeyh Cool feature. I didn't even know you could block people on GH :D

It is my opinion that the video game, "Tacoma", is underrated

achilleas,
@achilleas@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc IT'S ON THE LIST. Has been for way too long tbh. Maybe I'll bump it up a bit since you brought it up.

Why is Windows so bad at basic file operations? Isn't this supposed to be a Disk Operating System? Copying files is slow and unpredictable. Canceling file copies are bizarrely slow. If a file is added to a directory, I have to manually refresh for Windows Explorer to notice.

There is, in my downloads folder, a file named "2019-07-02 gutenberg.org.tar.part". I don't remember downloading this. Windows claims it to be several hundred gigabytes larger than my hard drive.

@mcc I've been running SyncThing on everything (including phone) for years and it's never failed me. It just silently sits there doing its thing. I've reached the point where I will drop something in a synced directory on the PC and walk away with my phone trusting that it's there without needing to check.

I put together some detailed notes showing how I use Claude and ChatGPT as part of my daily workflow - in this case describing how I used them for a 6 minute side quest to create myself a GeoJSON map of the boundary of the Adirondack Park in upstate New York

@simon But the interface is the point, isn't it? I agree that tools can be useful and difficult to learn and use but the promise of LLMs is the natural language interface. It's a tradeoff. You get a natural, intuitive interface at the expense of predictability, tractability, and precision. If the easy interface isn't there, then what's the point?

achilleas,
@achilleas@mastodon.social avatar

@simon Ok, we agree there. So the question is what are we spending all this effort and energy on?

🚨 FRIDAY QUIZ TIME 🚨
I have just provisioned a new dedicated server. It's been deployed running 22.04.3. I SSH'ed in as root, given the provided credentials. 🤓
QUESTION: What's the very first command I typed after logging in? 🤔

achilleas,
@achilleas@mastodon.social avatar

@popey I responded before scrolling through replies haha

This video rings bells for me. I've been using 3 displays for years now on my Linux laptop. but recently I've started using a laptop with full screen apps when I'm away from my desk. I find myself more productive. https://youtu.be/bIDL6buGNBY

achilleas,
@achilleas@mastodon.social avatar

@popey I gave away my second monitor a few months ago and I don't miss it at all. I've had two displays for so long I thought I'd go mad with one but it's been a huge improvement.
