I mean folks, just to be clear, the problem is not Jorts; in fact, I trust Jorts implicitly to do the right thing when it comes to "fuck off and die, nazis" on any level whatsoever.

The problem is that the fedi itself works in a certain way that means if my goal is to have a company like Meta, who I firmly believe will hand over everything they know about me to the nazis when the time comes, to not KNOW about me, that's basically impossible no matter WHAT Jorts does within reason.

Not sure from your comments if you've taken this factor into account - it's terribly confusing even for people who work with the tech - but if Jorts blocks Meta AND activates authorized fetch, that should actually keep your posts and account info away from Meta. Under those conditions, if followers on collaborator instances boost your posts, they won't federate over to Meta for data collection

@ophiocephalic I do plan on talking to the admin here about that, but they are very busy, and I do not know if they're using authorized fetch - I would assume not, given the purpose of this server is mostly anarcho-communist shitposting. But I simply don't know if that step is being taken here. I'll look into it when the opportunity presents itself. That having been said, even with that activated on other servers, I was still getting nazis screencapping me to post on totally defederated servers.

@AnarchoNinaWrites
Yeah, it's something of a delicate operation to ask your admin for that. I nagged the Kolektiva admins about it a couple times, and they're about to turn it on.

On the problem you described, I empathize, I've run into that myself. But it would only really work for you if it's activated on your instance.

If it's any help at all, here's a link to a good write up on the subject, with admin-level information: https://hub.sunny.garden/2023/06/28/what-does-authorized_fetch-actually-do/

@ophiocephalic Thank you. I am copying the link down now.

@AnarchoNinaWrites @ophiocephalic I'd like to add that ppl could still potentially screencap your posts by registering at a server that jorts federated with and follow you, but without posting or commenting anything that would get them banned (basically lurking).
Although I think it's hard for these kinds of people to hold their mouth, so eventually they will get caught.

True enough, authorized fetch can't solve every problem related to staying safe on social media. What's right in front of us is the prospect of Meta conducting surveillance and data collection of the information we offer up on the fedi, which up to this point has been a relative bastion of privacy respect. Activating authorized fetch can help with that and is a step in the right direction; there will be many more to take

There's a lot of things about the tech we're using here, that work very differently from other types of social media, and most of you out here are not aware of them at all. One of those issues is that even if your server defederates from the Meta servers, that doesn't mean your follower's servers will. You may have noticed, I have a lot of followers, and many of them come from mainline techbro-run instances that are actively seeking relationships with Meta - likely for financial reasons.

Jorts isn't going to federate with Meta servers, but masotodon.social for example, most definitely does, and wants to do so. Well when users from social interact with my posts, and I interact with them, that creates a vector of access to my content, through .social, to all the servers social federates with - which includes Meta servers. You may think that's not a big deal, and right not, it probably isn't. But I dunno if you've noticed; the world is adapting to serve fascism, very quickly.

@AnarchoNinaWrites@jorts.horse avatar

This is in addition to blocking not working how you think it does, blocking a whole server basically being like a giant mute button, etc. This tech is built to prevent you from SEEING annoying content, not actually keep ppl safe; and ultimately that isn't going to change. It doesn't matter to most people, but it does matter to a trans anarchist shit disturber low-key advocating for revolution in a time of increasingly normalized and empowered fascist controlling govts and buying up the internet.

@AnarchoNinaWrites we would argue that when it's unsafe for some political views to be discussed, that is a topic everyone should care about, even people with no specific beliefs of any kind, because it skews society

Furthermore, what I think this whole Meta scandal illustrates is that the vast majority of the people running large instances out here, are very much doing so because they want to eventually obtain a seat at the table in a tech industry I consider objectively fascist. If they can cash out, they're going to, regardless of who that harms. Which means eventually I WILL have to leave the fedi behind, just like I had to leave Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Blogger, Tumblr, etc behind.

I don't know how easy this will be to relate to for other people, but man, this is not my first rodeo. I've probably invested tens of thousands of hours is building up my presence on someone else's platforms over the past 12 or so years, and I've been quite successful at doing so - only to see all that work wasted, all those connections lost, vanish instantly when some guy decides it's time to sell the whole thing to AI guru nazis and billionaires. I don't want to keep doing this.
