🤔 There's a note in the break room at work reminding people that the kitchen sink is for washing coffee mugs, and hands, and maybe pieces of fruit, but not for "personal hygiene," and I just want to know what incident happened that created the need for such a sign.

@mekkaokereke Maybe someone was offended that a person brushed their teeth there, though. You know people are weird AF and get offended by the most bizarre things.

@crazybutable@mastodon.social avatar

@mekkaokereke you see Bob walking out of the break room

“Hey Bob, how was your vacation last week?”

“The bidet’s broken.”

“Um, excuse me, what?”

Bob casually finishes wiping his hands on a paper towel, tosses the paper towel in a nearby wastebasket, and clasps you on the shoulder “The bidet is broken.”

Just be glad that it was not the sign a friend of mine found in their college biology lab upon returning from a two-week school break. It read: "Please do not leave cat parts in sink."

@mekkaokereke I have always found people using personal shavers at work to be the worst, because they never clean up the hair they leave behind

birdpoof,

@ragectl @mekkaokereke

Worst thing I've ever found was, after moving cubicles, finding the desk tray full of fingernail clippings.

And the vast majority of people never wash their hands, so....

Okay, I'm almost certain that it was brushing teeth, given how most of the comments fall into either:

A) Some nasty people brush their teeth in the break room sink!

Or

B) Some people overreact to a totally normal thing like brushing your teeth in the break room sink!

@mekkaokereke I sincerely hope that’s all that it was.

@mekkaokereke I have no problem with people brushing teeth at work. I'd rather people brush teeth in the restroom and save the break room for dishes.

When you let the capitalists destroy the boundaries between work and home, this sort of thing is only to be expected.

@mekkaokereke
I walked in on a co-worker brushing his teeth in the men's room once. He apologized and tried to like... "hurry".

I just mumbled something like, "No apologies for clean teeth" and went on my way.

There were like 10 other sinks. This was a big corporation. It was so weird he felt the need to, like... I guess feel "shame" or something?

People really like to invent reasons to be bent out of shape.

justizin,

@mentallyalex @mekkaokereke totes, but bathroom sink != break room (kitchen) sink.

I think we should normalize brushing your teeth at work. Maybe it's just North America, but it always seems out of place seeing someone brush at work. I've seen it and thought it was odd, and someone else made fun of it, but then I thought "Why not brush your teeth at work?"

birdpoof,

@mentallyalex @mekkaokereke

I've seen women brush their teeth in the women's bathroom at work as well. I guess it doesn't bother me there because it's a cultural norm to do it in such a place. 😅

But a break room sink? I'm imagining one at a prior workplace and the break room was essentially an open area with a sink on one end, a few tables away from the hallway, and surrounded by vending machines. 🤔 It would be like brushing your teeth at the drinking fountain.

RufusJCooter,
@RufusJCooter@mstdn.social avatar

@birdpoof @mentallyalex @mekkaokereke Strong agree - we have taboos around "stuff that used to be inside your body should not, ideally, exit your body in public places" for a reason!

A workplace restroom is a private enough space for the brushing of teeth; a workplace breakroom is public enough that it shouldn't be used for the brushing of teeth.

    @mentallyalex @justizin @birdpoof @mekkaokereke Fair! I guess my assumption was that a workplace that's big enough to have a sink in the breakroom is likely big enough to have restroom(s) which can answer more than one call of nature at a time. Which ain't necessarily so!

    I used to work at a call center that had actually decent showers in the restrooms. I was very surprised, but then also very pleased when I had water issues at home and actually needed a place to shower.

    100% nothing weird about brushing your teeth at work, especially not in the bathroom.

    @mekkaokereke I used to routinely brush my teeth in a break room sink. But if you don't want everyone to think you're a dirtbag just because acting like a dirtbag, you probably should not do this.

    hramrach,

    @mekkaokereke Brushing teeth in the sink sounds awkward .. unless it's dentures.

    haydencodes,

    @mekkaokereke Just want to call out since I haven’t seen it mentioned in the replies: brushing/flossing your teeth at work is almost required for folks with certain orthodontic appliances. While not ideal it’s not difficult to imagine a bathroom that might force someone to the break room.
