Google says the Pixel 8 will get its new AI model, but RAM usage is a concern

Google wants AI models to be loaded 24/7, so 8GB of RAM might not be enough.

@arstechnica Would probably have to be something like 24GB as a realistic minimum. I can see why they'd need them loaded all the time though. It takes a little bit to load a LLM from a SSD with a fast desktop PC. A smartphone/tablet could be near useless if it only loaded on demand.

I guess it goes without saying this whole thing is just going to wreck battery life. And it's still probably going to phone home with insanely private info.

Apple users take note, Apple has similar plans.

@arstechnica Hmmmm... not good news for Gemini on the iPhone then, eh?

@arstechnica I hope there will be a way to get rid of it.

@arstechnica next up, if you buy a pixel but boot graphene on it Google charges you with murdering their AI spyware entity

TestUser42,

@arstechnica can't wait until they try to put this into a multimillion dollar airplane and then are surprised that they don't get it airworthy.

@arstechnica Hopefully there will be a marked for phones without all of this bloatware intended to inflate the stock price.

@arstechnica I wasn't going to buy another Pixel device before. Now I certainly as hell won't.

@Sh4d0w_H34rt Did you even read the first part of the article?

"on the Pixel 8, it's only being released "as a developer option." That means you'll be able to turn it on only via the hidden Developer Options menu in the settings, and most people will miss out on it."

@hackbod don't care. The marketing of AI on everything is a nightmare. Google Pixel devices already have serious issues, so of course they want to tease mixing the 2, screw that.
