So I somehow had the impression that Witchcraft was illegal in Canada, but I looked it up, and it turns out no, it is only pretending to do witchcraft which is illegal in Canada. So it appears witchcraft is legal but only as long as it's real, though you might have a difficult time in court if charged with fraudulent claims of witchcraft with proving magic is real

EDIT: See correction below

Everyone, I would like to apologize. The above post is misinformation. In fact, the Canada witchcraft statute was repealed in 2018. You may, in fact, as of this moment, pretend to be a witch for purposes of defrauding someone of money in Canada, except where modified by local statute. Please do not take this post as legal advice.

There may also be implications with the Law of Threefold Return. But here again we run into the problem of whether magic is real

@mcc magic is real and we call it engineering because we value pride more than wonder

@mcc @Tathar SQL does, sort of.

Retired DBA here. Pedantic too. Apologies in advance.

Null is the absence of a value as opposed to a value itself. That's why you can't use "where some_column = null".

Apologies again. Couldn't resist! I beg forgiveness.

Half-duplex transmission uses tri-state buffers: 0, 1, and high-Z

@Tathar @foolishowl The law of three states that the effects on the universe of one's actions will be returned to the self multiplied by a factor of three. By contrast engineering is covered by civil and criminal liability laws and will probably in general run to substantially less than 3x of real damages, especially in the case of software.

@mcc @Tathar of course not. we use the powers of two instead

@oblomov @mcc @Tathar I believe that's C#'s "bool?" type

oblomov,
@oblomov@sociale.network avatar

@aeva @mcc @Tathar I'm not familiar with C# types, but what I'm thinking about is actual full-fleshed ternary computing, things like
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Setun
or
https://homepage.cs.uiowa.edu/~dwjones/ternary/

aeva,
@aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@oblomov @mcc @Tathar I'm familiar with the concept. You could see if tundersqueak completed enough of her DIY ternary computer to build one https://hackaday.io/project/1043-base-3-ternary-computer-from-scratch

cliffordheath,
@cliffordheath@mastodon.social avatar

@oblomov @aeva @mcc @Tathar Why stop at three? Especially the wrong three :)

The four logical values are False, True, Paradox, and Tautology (undecidable). George Spencer-Brown proposed the third, but the system is incomplete without four

oblomov,
@oblomov@sociale.network avatar

@cliffordheath @aeva @mcc @Tathar

leaving aside that a tautology isn't undecidable, it's true, the reason for ternary computing is the optimal density.

@nev so I believe there actually are accreditation bodies for Reiki and I remember being kind of concerned when I found an Ontario Reiki business which did not seem to be following what I understood to be the professional rules

@mcc What I think happened: You had it right.
A witch took offence, warmed up the cauldron, eye newt, spiders, you know the recipe, and POOF! The laws appeared changed! It WAS MAGIC!

If you end up in court on this, call me.

@B_Whitewind Not sure if charging someone under this statute requires the defrauded party to press charges… looks like the place to look if one is curious about this is whatever court documents are public from the Tiffany Butch trial in 2018
