Blow me, kobo have announced colour e-readers, finally.

BUT! I tried one from a different company earlier this year and it sucked. So I’m not sure how this will be different.

BUT! I love kobo and their devices are amazing so maybe this will be different.

@Sobtanian I have a Kobo Libra H2O that still works great and that I rarely use, yet I can't help but want a color screen to read comics on.

Not that I think upgrading would lead to me using it much more than I do currently. 😅

@LadyMarth01 I use my kobos (I have two) a lot. I’m not too optimistic about comic reading on this, the BOOX that I tried sucked for that. My smaller kobo is falling apart so I figured why not upgrade to colour for the book covers mainly.

I’m really interested in NXTPAPER 3, that’s not really e-ink but it it’s a matte screen that looks very much like it. In full colour no less.

@LadyMarth01 @Sobtanian I’ve found that any screen size smaller than, say, 12” is just not big enough to read comics on. Having to constantly pan and zoom to read individual frames is just not a fun experience.

I had a 12.9” iPad which was the perfect size to take in all the detail at full page size, but not e-ink so too much reflection. I think we are a long way off devices like that.

@matt @LadyMarth01 check out NXTPAPER 3.

I read Comixology comics and they have automated panel transitions so are awesome, even on a smaller device.

But I agree, larger iPads are much better. In fact, comics are probably the only thing I use my iPad Pro for these days.

I can’t wait to get a NXTPAPER device though, they look like the solve all my issues.

@Sobtanian @matt I'm glad to see advancement in the technology, but to be honest, I'll probably stick with physical comics for the most part. Not anywhere near as cheap, but then I'm not exactly an avid comic reader, making it less of a problem.

@matt@mstdn.games avatar

@LadyMarth01 @Sobtanian yeah I’ve largely gone back to physical items for all sorts of things now anyway. I just don’t trust the platform holders any longer.

@Sobtanian I was just telling my wife today that I'll eventually buy a new ereader. Mine broke a few years ago, and since then I've been using an old Kindle of hers. The thing is, in my brain it is a borrowed device and I feel like I have to return it, so I don't feel like using it all the time as I would with an ereader that was "mine". It's absurd, but sometimes my brain brains weirdly.

Can you load your own epubs in a Kobo? How open are they?

Sobtanian,
@Sobtanian@mstdn.games avatar

@hk I was a Kindle user for years until I discovered kobo. Never looked back.

@hk@mstdn.games avatar

@Sobtanian awesome!! I'll take that into account then when deciding which one to buy next... Thank you!!

@hk @Sobtanian another vote for Kobo from me. Was on a Kindle Oasis but moved to a Libra 2. Less of a premium feel to the shell but absolutely every other aspect is much better for me. It’s just a pleasure to read from

Sobtanian,
@Sobtanian@mstdn.games avatar

@wiredfire @hk I’m fairly certain it was I, salesman extraordinaire, who got you to go kobo.

BLOCKED™

@Sobtanian @hk you were quite persuasive 😁

@Sobtanian I’m really curious to see how they are! I might actually grab one… I’m still rocking a Kindle Paperwhite, which I actually like quite a lot.

Curious, was it possibly the Boox you tried?

Sobtanian,
@Sobtanian@mstdn.games avatar

@britt it was. Not very good at all. Colours were just very faint. And it had terrible app support. I returned it.

I used to use Kindle but then discovered Kobo, so much better: bigger devices and no need to mess about with custom firmwares, you can load anything onto them, including Amazon’s own amazing bookerly font ;)

I’m kinda more interested in NXTPAPER 3.0. It’s not really e-ink but it does a damn fine job at pretending to be, and it’s full colour when you need it also.

Not out yet.

    @Longplay_Games @britt which did you prefer? For me, kobo wasn’t about the screen, it was about the size and feel of the device and how open it was.

    @Sobtanian @britt I have always been a Kobo person since the Aura H2O became the first 'waterproof' reader.
    The screen was so sharp, so clear, and it was so easy to just pop in my 5k ebooks and magazines on a microSD, that it was a no brainer.

    I've since been using a 10" android more just because I have to do so much PDF work anymore.

    @Longplay_Games @Sobtanian Really good to know.

    I wish so very much that I didn’t have hundreds of books on the Amazon platform accumulated over the years. I’ve still got my eye on Kobo and might check it out one day :)
