German parliament has just passed the “self-determination act” ( #selbstbestimmungsgesetz) which lets people change their gender and name in official records and legal documents through an administrative procedure based on self-identification. This is a major change from the previous legal status that often treated the identity of trans and nonbinary people as a medical diagnosis. 1/2
Although the new law doesn’t go as far as many have hoped, it is important as Germany now becomes one of thirteen European countries that allow trans people to self-identify. 2/2
