So, hypothetically, if I wanted to setup an experimental online store for physical products, what would be the most cost effective way of doing this?

I'm happy using Webflow, but it's not cheap... so I won't be using that to start with.

My skills in HTML and CSS are very limited, so I need something visual to build upon.

Setting up images and branding is of course no problem.

Advice appreciated!

@andycarolan We use Big Cartel for our sticker shop and it's been great! 👍 https://hemisphericviews.com/shop

@jason Ooh, nice! That's the kind of thing I had in mind... nice clean layout, easy to navigate.

@andycarolan I would externalize all technical comsiderations and just get a big cartel website store. They are great.

@Kowfm Thanks. Big Cartel has been suggested by a few people. Sounds like the best plan :)

@andycarolan I've used Ko-fi for music and books

andycarolan,
@andycarolan@social.lol avatar

@randulo Thanks Randy. I do actually use Ko-fi for some of my own stuff :)

As what I have in mind will be entirely experimental, I want to keep it at least somewhat separate from my existing work.

Someone suggested BigCartel which looks good so I might give it a try.

@andycarolan One thing you'll want to do is watch for the friction level for payments. It's annoying to want to donate or purchase only to find it's complicated by some issue or another.
I haven't heard of BigCartel, I'll have to take a look, thanks!

andycarolan,
@andycarolan@social.lol avatar

@randulo Oh totally!

Also, some sites and services are pretty greedy, and take a lot of money in fees.

Ko-fi is a really good platform isn't it!

Someone even suggested using Stripe to create products and add it to a static site, so there are so many options :)

InsertUser,

@andycarolan Are you after something where for you to do fulfilment yourself or for something where that's all handled for you?

Not that I have an answer either way, just curious.

andycarolan,
@andycarolan@social.lol avatar

@InsertUser Purely a storefront, I would be doing the creation/fulfilment myself :)

InsertUser,

@andycarolan OK. The only thing I've heard of that isn't mentioned in this thread is odoo, but that's pretty much the opposite of "just a storefront". It's an ERP/MRP system that can be used to do ecommerce too if you want it to. I don't recall it being particularly cheap either.

andycarolan,
@andycarolan@social.lol avatar

@InsertUser Thanks for the info. I must confess that I've never heard of that before! I will take a look :)

@andycarolan shopify has the most functionality out of all e-commerce platforms but it's a white nationalist company sooooo i would consider getting a wordpress and using maybe the woocommerce app?

andycarolan,
@andycarolan@social.lol avatar

@dexiheart I must confess that Shopify is low on my list anyway partly because they leaked a lot of my data some years back, and I'm still getting spam because of them.

dexiheart,
@dexiheart@laserdisc.party avatar

@andycarolan i worked there for 6 years it is a total shitshow internally

andycarolan,
@andycarolan@social.lol avatar

@dexiheart I'm hearing that about a lot of larger companies lol

@andycarolan Another option is Gumroad: https://gumroad.com I haven’t used it but have bought things from sites that are hosted there. Good luck!

andycarolan,
@andycarolan@social.lol avatar

@mrshawnliu Thanks! I have used Gumroad to buy from, and I did once have a listing there too. It's a fun platform!

@andycarolan to quickly go and avoid platform fees, you can set up a product with Stripe and embed that on your site. I assume their fees are less than something like Gumroad and BigCartel. I did it once before for a zine I mailed—probably should’ve done that for my stickers instead than KoFi…

andycarolan,
@andycarolan@social.lol avatar

@humdrum That's interesting. I didn't know I could do that with Stripe.

In fairness though, I want to keep this separate to my own site and work. For no other reason that it's experimental and its ‘own thing', so something like Big Cartel could work for what I have in mind.

humdrum,
@humdrum@social.lol avatar

@andycarolan yeah, that makes sense! Here's an example of a Stripe embed, just as an FYI, anyways..

andycarolan,
@andycarolan@social.lol avatar

@humdrum Oooh, actually, that's very helpful. Thanks! I might well check that method out for something else 🤔

@andycarolan if you need any help, feel free to hit me up 😁

andycarolan,

@humdrum Thank you!

preya,
@preya@mastodon.social avatar

@andycarolan You can easily run self-hosted shops like Magento, Shopware, WooCommerce for less than 5 usd per month.

andycarolan,
@andycarolan@social.lol avatar

@preya Thanks, that's interesting. I will take a look at those. As it's experimental, I don't want to pay much to get it started... can always revisit it if it's successful! :)

robb,
@robb@social.lol avatar

@andycarolan SquareSpace, Shopify, BigCartel off the top of my head.

thisismissem,
@thisismissem@hachyderm.io avatar

@andycarolan I think most go either shopify, big cartel, or squarespace?

andycarolan,
@andycarolan@social.lol avatar

@thisismissem @robb Thanks, I think Big Cartel might be the best option for me! I wlll take a closer look! 🙏
