People who use , what built-in editor tools do you spend more time with than external tools to generate the same results?

I.e. if you make most of your art in an external editor like aseprite and import a PNG into pico 8, then you shouldn't pick "sprite editor". If you spend most of your time writing code inside pico 8 and not in say, notepad++, then you should select "code editor"

Triplefox,

@eniko the answers to this are really interesting because if we framed it as "where does the work actually get done", the answer in most instances, with the exception of code, is that 50% of it is in the tool. But which 50% varies by project and skillset.

@eniko I don't like mode switching between programs, so I stick to the build-in tools. Exception for really complicated sprites; if today's part of the project is "create this one visual", I'll use a dedicated pixel art editor. Note: I mostly use tic-80 instead of Pico-8, but it's the same principle.

@eniko I only ever use the internal tools for everything, which feels like a sort of masochism

nettles,

@eniko I want to answer but I'm struggling to understand what expresses this correctly. I almost always prefer an external code editor; I tend to prefer an external gfx editor but I'll use the built in one a lot of the time too; I mostly use the map editor except in cases where I decide to make a custom tool; and I am awful at audio so I have never yet successfully used the music editor and only very occasionally use the sfx editor. Regardless, I don't have alternate tools for audio.

@eniko missing « a none of the above » option to be complete

@fsouchu oh shit yeah didn't realize picking none isn't an option

@eniko I'm personally 50/50 on external sprite and internal sprite.

I tend to do animated sprites in pico8, but large elements (like title screen, UI etc) I'll do in Aseprite.

Everything else, bar code, I do in Pico8 itself.

@BigTheDave I'm a bit confused sfx and music are so low, I wasn't aware there were external options for those
