@wmd: So far no issues, but my last experience are quite some years old:

From Berlin to Zurich in 2010 or 2011 worked flawless. Can't remember any details anymore, probably because it caused no issue. (No more sure which operator. ICN stopped in 2009)

Talgo from Zurich to Barcelona (IIRC 2009, definitely before 2012): The space between the opposite beds was so narrow that I had to put up the folded Brompton in parallel to the beds instead of the expected orientation parallel to the window.

@xtaran @wmd Jon Worth @jon has another brand folding bike that he takes with him on his train journeys across Europe and might already have a write-up of the practicalities (although I couldn’t find it off-hand)

@tml @xtaran @wmd Birdy. No issues at all - as it’s small enough to be considered luggage. Two tips: get a cover to stop grime getting onto things in trains (Tern Carry On Cover is my favourite). And get a small cable lock to stop it falling off luggage racks.

@jon @tml @xtaran hmm, haven't seen much luggage racks on night trains. I thought you always had to keep in the cabin?

@wmd @tml @xtaran above the corridor, in a compartment. Sometimes rather narrow. I’ve locked it on a few times.
