Among the terms the #NYTimes memo tells reporters to avoid: “Palestine” (“except in very rare cases”), “occupied territories” (say “Gaza, the West Bank, etc.”) and “refugee camps” (“refer to them as neighborhoods, or areas”). The memo discourages the use of the terms “genocide” (“We should…set a high bar for allowing others to use it as an accusation”) and “ethnic cleansing” (“another historically charged term”).
@FAIR Genocide has a specific meaning under international laws to which the U.S. is a party. If the jackboot fits, Israel needs to wear it. If it doesn't, then no. But either way, this is not a judgment call.
When a credible charge of genocide has been made, you need to discuss the accusation thoroughly -- you can't "set a high bar for allowing others to use it as an accusation," as the #NYTimes insists--that's a recipe for making sure than when a genocide is happening, it won't be stopped.
