@yassie_j oh ffs I choose mastodon for longevity and stability reasons and now they're moving to the USA? That one place that tries to put backdoors in everything, and they'll now have legal power over mastodon? like honestly that move alone is enough to make me deeply uncomfortable, nevermind the rest 😭
@yassie_j thanks, it does make it slightly better, but the USA has shown liable to exert absolutely any tiny bit of leverage they have to get more control over things, and you won't hear about it unless they have a Warrant Canary like with Proton.. like the EU isn't a lot better in terms of overreaching security laws and stuff, but at least they don't actively try to weaken the security of things for the sake of having more control

And assuming the warrant or court gag order weren't worded in such a way that actually letting the canary indicate is now a violation of a court order anyways
For anyone curious: the current legal take is that something that you intentionally remove, do not update, or otherwise change your regular course of action for that either directly alerts, or is understood to mean to alert, users to warrants and surveillence attempts, would violate the secrecy part of the order, as you are doing something (or not doing something that you would normally do) that would be understood with little ambiguity to mean to be disclosing the attempt.
The current opposing take is... first ammendment, and free speech takes precedent here. Maybe a touch of 5A too, TL;DR the government cannot force someone to lie.
I don't know how many cases of these have made it to court. But I do damn well know that the courts know of canaries, and if push comes to shove, the courts have no issue claiming that the bill of rights doesn't apply, whenever it's inconvenient.
@atom@yassie_j they get everything mastodon gets pretty quickly, its a very soft fork. there’s a lot of other forks which are similar. if mastodon were to make some shitty moves that influence the software side of things though (besides just being generally not good to use cause thats all mastodon knows amiright hahahfngngngnf i use masto who am i kidding) im sure a lot of them would diverge more though
@atom@yassie_j everyone switch to my fork to get away from the evils of website boy and the board of website peoples, my fork is a hard fork because i don’t maintain it ever LMFAO
