Having never had a smartphone (although, to be fully transparent, my wife does have one), I'm deriving a certain amount of amusement from the continuing rise in commentary on the health & wellbeing benefits of the 'dumb phone'.... which directly parallel my reasons for not wanting one in the first place.
But someone pointed out to me, just as someone later pointed out about "Mac" that selling software and not being involved made them question things. So I now have performative purchases, for folks I can now guarantee are as thick as dog-s*** because the only difference is owning a relic they find reassuring.
It shakes out in the end, but really does show the absolute stupidity of these devices.
@ChrisMayLA6 I can’t help feeling people would have a more balanced view of what a smart phone can be were it not for social media which (contrary to impressions given) is not the only use case. The device isn’t the evil, it’s what foolish easily obsessed people do with it.
Sure that's a fair comment.... but then again, I seem to manage pretty well without one (although as demonstrated right now, I'm clearly active on social media)
@ChrisMayLA6 If the smart phone had never been built then people would ascribe all the bad stuff stemming from internet access to the evil laptop or desktop. And before the public had access to the internet it was common to blame television or pop music. When I was a teenager discotheques and mopeds got the blame. Go back further and the root of social evil was the distribution of pamphlets. I blame coming down from the trees.
@ChrisMayLA6@christineburns Yes, it is all what we do with it. I have no social media apps on my smart phone. I do use it for a hotspot for my laptops. I only use social media via a browser. No notifications constantly interrupting me!!!
I have a 42 year long love/hate relationship with the leash. As a 17yo I got DARPA issued pagers and a radio phone to go with my own pagers. The perils of being inventive. Now they would issue me with a secure smart phone, and an Iridium phone. Wait!📱🛰️☎️ 🙀
