Blackpool verdict looks like electoral death sentence for Tories - https://www.theguardian.com/politics/article/2024/may/03/blackpool-verdict-looks-like-electoral-death-sentence-for-tories "Full results likely to point to drubbing for Rishi ’s Conservatives at the general election" a bit premature, but one can hope...

@glynmoody except ... turnout was low, winning Labour candidate got 2000 fewer votes than losing Labour candidate in 2019. Stay at home shy Tory vote will re-emerge at the general election. Talk of Tory death is a bit previous IMO.

@ely_peddler indeed, as I said, a little premature

@glynmoody The Reform results - those that I've seen - are fairly disturbing though.

@fkamiah17 but expected, unfortunately

@glynmoody God, can you imagine if Labour are in government and Reform are the official opposition? Given the stats I've seen, it's not out of the question ...

glynmoody,
@glynmoody@mastodon.social avatar

@fkamiah17 definitely a possibility

@fkamiah17 @glynmoody have you considered The Tories and Reform agreeing a pact with key roles for Tice and Farage.? I see that as a possibility. Ditch Sunak, put in place Braverman or Badenoch who would embrace Reform. That would potentially make it harder for Labour to win as Labour’s vote share has hardly increased and down 16% in areas with high Muslim pop.

@Lassielmr @glynmoody I think things may have gone too far the other way for Reform to do that this time, after 2019. There isn't the Brexit incentive now. I wouldn't rule it out completely, but Tice/Farage's egos are too inflated not to want to bask in any glory.

@Lassielmr @fkamiah17 @glynmoody
It’s a possibility for sure, but my guess is that Reform see no benefit in that. They’d rather see the Tories smashed and desperate, then simply take over the bits they like at no cost. (eg the party finance lists, the electoral agent lists, the local activist lists). In short, a cheap decapitate and absorb strategy that as a private company they can do without adhering to any electoral guidelines.
