This sounds like an awesome activity, but it's restricted to kids under 12 yo. 😔

@ojala I would very much like to read to dogs, and I’m 44 😁

@ojala I did this when I was younger. A group would bring in therapy dogs in-training to a local library and children could read to the dogs. Iirc the purpose was two fold. Boost confidence in children learning to read, since dogs don’t judge. And to help train the dogs to sit still and be patient. A successful program in my opinion!

@ojala You can pretty much read to any dog, they all enjoy it

@ojala it's a well known technique for helping kids who have trouble reading to practice (the dogs don't judge and don't get bored), but I feel ya.

@ojala

How do you train a reading dog? I guess it's a variation of "sit" and can only be taught to dogs that have a narrow band of temperament in between don't run around and don't fall asleep.

Hand_Eye_Originals,

@ojala "Reading FROM Dogs" would be awesome. I wonder what books they'd choose to read to us ignorant humans?

another_katt,

@ojala
well that's a bad policy right there. The dogs'understanding of the literary universe will be quite limited.

Iwillyeah,

@ojala no one can stop you reading to dogs. It is merely the illusion of control!

@ojala
Humans can read to dogs.

redflag,

@ojala I converse with my two dogs daily, one of them even talks back.

@ojala Librarians are awesome, so I bet if you asked they would schedule a separate Reading To Dogs activity for adults at another time.

@ojala I’ve read this is a really effective way to get kids to read more. But also, I have a dog who loves to sit on my feet while I read, so it’s a win-win for both kids and dogs (and I want to read to my dog more often too)

    @ojala my dog wants COVID lockdown back so I can work from home again (my job requires lots of reading)

    @ojala you can find a parent and borrow their kid. We will think you are doing us a giant favor.

    @ojala yeah you need to ACTUALLY be good friends with the parents and build the trust over years so they don't think you're creepy. That's the only weird trick.

    @ojala I have a strong feeling that Echo shouldn't be introduced to cats. At least not suddenly.
