Interesting beekeeping discovery yesterday. Used the new battery-powered weed whacker to trim around beehives, and got ZERO reaction to the weed whacking and equipment. I'm curious if this is because they are most sensitive to the smell of gasoline powered weed whackers, or the noise level/vibration of the battery powered trimmers is below what would trigger a reaction. (they are known for hating people weed whacking around their hives). #beekeeping
@ai6yr I'll bet it's the smell; bees don't like bears because of smell, and when I was taking a beekeeping class, got after me because I was wearing wool socks.
@ai6yr Mine stung me on the knee when I used a battery trimmer just yesterday. They don't like me doing it at all. But I imagine a gas engine noise and smell would be a lot worse.
@middleclasstool Ah, interesting. Well, did this suited as you'd be a fool to weed whack around any feral hive in Southern California (especially with gasoline) without being fully suited... The genetics here of the wander hives definitely not as tame as Italians. (we have yet to get any Italian queen to survive and produce through a season here...don't seem to be able to compete against those ferals.)
