alexpsmith,

Regarding the whole bear meme that's going around the internet, I'll say this much: I've been backpacking all around the world solo, and have gone on extensive trips in the wilderness where bears exist, including the entire Appalachain Trail and Olympic National Park amd Olympic National Forest. I've encountered plenty of bears and plenty of men while alone at night, and the bears were always, always less threatening to me. Not because men are powerful or anything like that, of course, but because of their behaviour and potential motives.

The men who are protesting need to learn to shut up and listen.

alexpsmith,

A couple people I know on Facebook showed me some screenshots of men's comments on feminist pages regarding the bear meme, and I remember why I don't talk to people anymore. Holy fuck, people are dangerous and insane.

As a guy I don't understand why men would be upset about this. It seems perfectly reasonable & understandable.
Of course I'm not a big man baby who thinks everything is some personal attack on me. But regardless, it's just the way it is. Sure, it makes me sad, and I do whatever I can to not be a reason for it. But I don't need to get all spun up and blame someone for something like that. Having lived exactly zero days as a women I'm not really qualified to asses it's validity

alexpsmith,

@asbestos Men get mad at women for being aware of misogyny. No one is asking you to assess the validity.

@alexpsmith
Yes, but it seems many men decided that they should weigh in.

@alexpsmith the 'not all men' is a 'no true scotsman' logical fallacy

and men use it to justify, well, every single bad thing men do

who is raising these broken men?

alexpsmith,

@samiamsam Anyone who trots out "not all men" can immediately get fucked.

@alexpsmith I think part of the issue is that they don’t seem to be able to in the first place. 😉 @samiamsam

Well said. I was trying to come up with something similar without seeming to be one of them

Yep. My wife and daughter have educated me over the years to their reality. But it is still difficult to just keep quiet when my daughter says all men... my immediate impulse is to say ' are you saying you think I would..."
I stop myself because she is explaining the world she lives in and yes, if she did not know me she would understandably be as wary of me as of any other. Nothing about my appearance or demeanor of the moment says I would be an exception.

alexpsmith,

@dbc3 @Pineywoozle @samiamsam No one is an exception by virtue of their other qualities.

@alexpsmith @Pineywoozle @samiamsam decades ago I was working in NC, walking on a city sidewalk, and Black man was coming toward me. As he got close he moved to the curb and dropped his gaze, looking down and toward the street. I asked myself how I could have not so threatened him. The only possible answer was "Be Black." It was not about me personally, & I was saddened that that was the life he lived. My being male is the same thing for women.
