Germany is banning the rector of the University of Glasgow from entering the EU. Because he’s a witness to genocide (as a surgeon who among other things repairs blown off faces of children) who was to speak at the French senate.

Germany has completely lost it.

What are these other sources that say there was a congress held to promote destroying Israel and which they wanted to attend?

@maswaba @thomasfuchs considering the story of Israel of smearing anyone who is critical of them, you may want to check those sources before spreading. I'd find that hard to believe of anyone holding his position anywhere in the UK.

@maswaba @thomasfuchs das ist so beleidigend uninformiert und ignorant. Egal welches Thema, irgendein arroganter deutscher kommt mit seiner drei minuten google recherche um die ecke und meint, die welt erklären zu müssen.

I asked that in disbelief and I'm apparently not alone:
"How can Germany issue territorial bans throughout the Schengen area? It's unbelievable." senator Raymonde Poncet Monge asked (from https://www.lemonde.fr/en/international/article/2024/05/04/palestinian-doctor-ghassan-abu-sittah-banned-from-entering-france_6670415_4.html)
A quick search on his name brought up several articles about him in dec 2023. Then nothing until yesterday. Thanks for bringing it up, I would have totally missed it assumingly.

Yes! I completely agree and should have added: how is that even possible - or rather, given that this is based on a unilateral, political decision by Germany, it shouldn’t be possible - that shouldn’t apply to the whole of the EU. Deeply wrong.

cweickhmann,

@herrmannpierre
The mechanism is called Schengen Information System (SIS) and any Schengen member can issue bans that all apply Schengen-wide (not EU-wide, as not all EU member states take part in the Schengen area and some Schengen participants aren’t EU members, it’s complicated).

I’d be really curious to see the justification for that entry though. Since Abu Sittah went to Den Haag in Jan 2024, this entry must be very recent. As of now, the incident does not seem to make any waves in German media. It’s mainly a UK/France issue at the moment.

Thanks for the info.

Do you also know, which part of the german government or public administration is in charge of such decisions? Guess something like department of foreign affairs?

Didn't have the time for a full search but found that someone made a whole wikipedia entry for Abu Sitta yesterday.

@herrmannpierre @cweickhmann @thomasfuchs

It originates from the ban Germany issued when he was travelling to Germany for the Palestine congress in April. The same entry ban was put on Varoufakis then. It is the fact that this turns out to have Schengen wide effect that people are angry/aatonished about; maybe it is just a function of how Schengen works, but it does raise questions about Schengen working for arbitrary, initially unilateral bans.

Varoufakis is Greek citizen, he cannot be banned from entering Schengen. Do you have a reference for this claim?

@cweickhmann @herrmannpierre @thomasfuchs

I understand Varoufakis can’t be banned from Schengen as a Greek citizen. But he and Abu Sitta were banned from Germany under the same “Einreiseverbot”. I am puzzled how exactly this German entry ban applies Schengen wide for Abu Sitta. I understand AS is not an EU citizen; it may indeed just be that, but it is still noteworthy that a unilateral, political German decision can apply EU wide.

    I did research on his background but couldn’t find anything that would suggest he is pro-Hamas.

    @denis @thomasfuchs you need to research in German. Kim Robin Stoller collected a lot of I remember correctly. For a rough thing you’ll find some traces in newspapers.

    There are no Google results for the combination of Ghassan Abu Sitta and Kim Robin Stoller — are you sure this is correct?

    @denis @thomasfuchs The person quoted by @vonneudeck isn’t Ghassan Abu Sitta but his uncle Salman Abu Sitta. “The furor related to a January blog post in which Salman Abu Sitta wrote that he ‘could have been one of those who broke through the fence’ if he were younger and still lived ‘in the concentration camp called the Gaza Strip.’”

    For anyone who doesn't have the context, the rector is an experienced surgeon and was providing medical aid under the Israeli onslaught.

    What Germany and others are afraid of is his testimony.
