One of the worst things about having someone you care about who isn't doing well is the random people you bump into who greet you with "how are you today?"
I hate insincerity in myself and lying even more.
So, I want to say, "pretty fucking awful and you?"
I don't. But honestly, it'd be better than the real truth "My Dad is on life support and my best friend just found out his eight year old has stage 4 cancer. You?"
@philip_cardella yeah that sucks. Been there, though the details always differ. It's terrible, bc the ordinary conventions of small talk conspire to remind you how much everything sucks right then. You're just getting drilled over and over with it. It really fucking blows and I'm sorry that's how it is for you right now
