literally everything i do today for work and money comes directly from 'me dabbling at random stuff at a computer 20 years ago that no one else around me understood' so i truly feel sorry for kids of helicopter parents who are like 'no screens'

i'm not going to say 'smartphones / screen time is good' but rather 'authority figures deciding for kids has usually been based on the wrong science'

empowerment and education rather than deprivation never goes out of fashion

whitneymcn,

@skinnylatte I think kids today even have it a bit harder, because "screen time" doesn't necessarily include/allow "view source" time today, much less "I'll just pop the case off and look at the guts" time.

skinnylatte,
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

@whitneymcn my nieces are still doing that! i think it's a bit different but there are varying degrees of different internals that people who are interested can still look under the hood for. maybe this is different for someone who's just on tiktok, but also who's to say that the person on tiktok isn't also some video production genius to be who found their voice there?

letting kids do things and showing them guardrails feels important in every era

i also find it difficult to just have a blanket 'kids these days' statement... lots of kids are opting out of social media. many are not. lots of kids are smart about things. others are not. in other words, lots of kids are exactly like we were when we were kids.

what's changed is the speed and landscape of some of the tools, and also the inherent dangers of some of the things they're facing that we didn't, in a text-only world. i hope we can lean towards educating and empowering, still.

skinnylatte,
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

i really, really dislike the world of 'let's lean harder into authority 4 the kidz'. i hate that people like jonathan haidt get to grift about things like these and create a sense of moral panic.

literally all of the children children i know have accounts on private, interrogate you to see you're not a stranger, and have fake accounts. they're far more savvy than we think.

skinnylatte,
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

and i say 'everything i do for work and money' because i also know if you ask those parents they'll be like 'sure i would love for my kids to have a good tech job' or whatever, but maybe they think they can 'send them to a bootcamp', but actually 'kids hacking on things' is the best way to learn, always been...

my 14yo niece... 'i just changed the firmware of my grandma's router to speed it up coz she has lousy networking equipment

@skinnylatte for my kids, they should be creating stuff. doesn’t matter what or how, or even if it’s good. they knit, draw, paint, use dall-e, 3d print, mix beats on my phone, … and they do consume also, podcasts, youtube, books, … but i figure as long as they’re taken with creating, they’ll be okay

@skinnylatte honestly, if i ever end up having kids, I'm more worried about having the "internet safety" talk than I about about the safe sex talk.

The sometimes I feel like we've reinvented the fae with the advent of the internet. Especially now with AI running around doing a heckin bamboozle to everyone.

skinnylatte,
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

@bigShinyRainbowMotherFucker there's lots of messed up stuff now for sure. i understand the need to protect. that's why giving them the information they need to make decisions for themselves is also more impt than ever.

@skinnylatte same. I can trace my entire career back to weekends spent messing around with Linux on some piece of crap laptops while I should’ve been studying or sleeping.

skinnylatte,

@g yep, and no amount of 'sending your kids to a bootcamp' can replace what you really learn from 'just messing about'
