🆕 blog! “One MegaWattHour of Battery Power!”

Less than a year ago, in August 2023, we installed a 4.8kWh Solar Battery at a cost of £2,900. Whenever I talk about the upfront capital costs of solar power, people rightly want to know what the payback period is. Well, after less than 10 months, the battery has given us 1MWh. To put that […]

@Edent I am considering doing it when we redo our roof (don’t want to install anything on an old roof) but my main problem isn’t the tech or even install cost, it’s how scammy the whole commercial aspect around it is (at least where I am). All I see is over inflated claims, financing offers, etc, when all I want is a quality setup with reliable support if needed…

literally everything i do today for work and money comes directly from 'me dabbling at random stuff at a computer 20 years ago that no one else around me understood' so i truly feel sorry for kids of helicopter parents who are like 'no screens'

@skinnylatte same. I can trace my entire career back to weekends spent messing around with Linux on some piece of crap laptops while I should’ve been studying or sleeping.

Audio Hijack by @RogueAmoeba has always been awesome, but 4.4.0 making use of recent macOS improvements to:

1 - not require reboots/disabling security features to set up
2 - work as a standard user

is AMAZING

    Sure we've got influencers, but really central to infosec community cohesion is the shitposters. I worry that emerging infosec students aren't told about the importance of our shitposters. We need a list for them.

    Maybe even a college course.

    It so awful that in our current state of commerce, buying something online opens you up to constant email badgering by the seller until you literally demand to be left alone.

    Mozilla should definitely do this. And then when it goes nowhere, everyone will finally agree that PWAs were never a great platform for mobile apps. Right? https://indieweb.social/@whalecoiner/111940727614198057

    I will say this until it is no longer true:

    If a non-admin user clicking on a link or opening up an infected word file damages anything on your network your security is shit.

    Periodt.

    g,
    @g@irrelephant.co avatar

    @shortridge @bynkii @saraislet and in the meantime there’s an RCE in Outlook preview pane anyway, so now we should blame users for previewing emails. Next step would be to blame them for receiving it, and soon, for existing.

    The three million toothbrush botnet story isn’t true.

    Here’s the original source of the story: https://archive.is/2024.01.30-203406/https://www.luzernerzeitung.ch/wirtschaft/kriminalitaet-die-zahnbuersten-greifen-an-das-sind-die-aktuellen-cybergefahren-und-so-koennen-sie-sich-schuetzen-ld.2569480

    It’s simply a made up example. It doesn’t exist. It starts talking about NoName Ddosia, too, which also isn’t toothbrushes.

    g,
    @g@irrelephant.co avatar

    @GossiTheDog @SwiftOnSecurity but IT COULD HAPPEN as soon as someone makes a toothbrush with a 2lbs battery in it! It COULD!

    Does anyone know of any attacks, either PoC or in the wild, that use malicious printer cartridges to infect printers? I saw this article from 2022

    https://www.action-intell.com/2022/10/05/hp-bug-bounty-program-finds-reprogrammable-chips-open-printers-to-malware/

    It says that HP's Bug Bounty program found such attacks are possible, but there are no details about who reported the bug that made such attacks possible. I remain skeptical about the accuracy.

    Any help from experts in the form of pointers to attacks or analysis about whether printer cartridges are a viable infection vector would be much appreciated.

    I’ve been looking at IMDb as a data source for an app.

    But it’s 120000 a year

    There’s an IMDb-api site that’s much less, but only accepts PayPal and crypto. Which is a bit weird. Is it legit?

    g,

    @sanguish I’ve seen apps that look decent built on https://developer.themoviedb.org/docs - not sure how their commercial pricing works, is that the one you are referring to with PayPal and crypto?
