This is a pretty basic, "and what's the deal with airline food??" kinda observation, but
It's just been brought to my attention that a Chrome tab takes up a minimum of 24 to 28 MB of RAM*, even if it's looking at about:blank or an empty HTML page. There are good engineering reasons it might work this way but I am also thinking about how my first computer-shaped computer** had 4 MB of RAM and that was like, an OS plus sophisticated full apps. Later we upgraded to 8 MB RAM and that was a big deal
literally everything i do today for work and money comes directly from 'me dabbling at random stuff at a computer 20 years ago that no one else around me understood' so i truly feel sorry for kids of helicopter parents who are like 'no screens'
The items for my brother's pitch drop experiment birthday present arrived, so now I need to make a stand for the funnel. This brass ring is a good place to start
@KissAnne@WolfIsMe Just an example from real life, relative of mine moved from Helsinki to Turku, and I suspect that she stayed alive just because of that, due the cancer handling.
In case you’re thinking of learning to swim as an adult in SF: YMCA Embarcadero and Presidio both have adult swim classes. I’d recommend the private class if you’re a n00b (like me). $50ish for 30 min for members, more for non-members, once a week? I took 6 classes and I learned freestyle and backstroke. I feel reasonably confident, enough to start swimming on my own.
Maybe I wasn’t 100% a n00b (I could do breaststroke) but I needed to build confidence after an accident in a pool years ago
@skinnylatte Just a suggestion, learn to dive before to swim. Be either below or top of the surface, but be confident that you can just alway go up for air. Or just stay below the surface in low water until you feel familiar with top of the water.
@Viss My second set is having a attempt. Have to experiment on when moving them to cooler (not-heated) areas. The temp is closer to 28 normally, dropped below 27 as I opened the cover.
I’ve lived most of my life thinking I don’t love bread, but I simply do not love: factory made bread, and Californian bread (Tartine-style too sour too tangy bread makes me really angry)
My baking experiments this past year have helped a lot. My relationship is bread is better now
Also learning about flatbreads in Middle East, India and China
Sometimes when I open up my Lenovo+Linux laptop, I find it's just sut off, for no apparent reason. Sometimes it does this even when battery is at more than 50%. I feel like this really shouldn't be happening.
My #cats had scratched my couch and it looked awful, so I had to buy a new fabric cover. #Today I protected the armrest with this scratching pad. I sewed it to the couch. Let's see how it works. I will get my cats Sanni and Siiri home tomorrow. ☺️♥️ #catsofmastodon#caturday#suomimastodon#kissat
While I’m not vegan, many of my friends are, and I love cooking for my friends.
I’ve personally found that many vegan versions of many SE Asian food on the Internet are pretty poor. But that recipe developers based in SE Asia who are making veg versions of local recipes come much, much closer. Which makes me happy when I eat their food too.
@skinnylatte On the matter of replacing fish dishes, you can do carrot slices, cover them on salt, put in fridge over night, taking them out, cover with honey and herbs, and you have replacement for salmon. Try around with order and herbs.
someday I will write that essay in hopes it will help CN diaspora folks who are grappling with identity: you can be Chinese and not care about China
(I had... never thought about China at all, growing up, until now, except "omg stop encroaching into SEA waters"... but it seems to be a Pain Point for many)
@skinnylatte@geraineon Had sort of easy time talking to people in Malaysia, and later on came to think of it as people who had to choose from only bad options have something in common.
@skinnylatte@geraineon The talks we had (late decade before the previous) were about what the oppressor was going to do in information space, I think I pointed towards east Europe.
@Rasta@KissAnne As it goes I'm listening to Risky Business podcasts ( https://risky.biz/ ) on weekly basis. They are nice if you want to keep up with the infosec area. Dancing goes with the listening too!
