Happy Guilted Into Buy Flowers-And-Chocolate Day, And Maybe Stand In An Endless Line For A Horribly Crowded Brunch Day for those that celebrate!
(hint: if you truly want to celebrate your mother, do what we always did for my mom, and do the buffet the week BEFORE or the week AFTER, when the buffet is better and you don't have crowds; I also used to go to the chocolate/flower stores the DAY AFTER and had gotten flowers for 90% off and chocolates for 50-75% off... 😉
@ai6yr I'm happy with a Happy Mother's Day and a big hug tbh. Some stuff is too big to be shovelled into consumerism and all the things you need to say are for all the days, not just one. Love is way to big for a mug or a bunch of flowers or a meal.
@ai6yr we were at the bookstore yesterday and the clerk was like wow this holiday man so busy- seems like we just got over Christmas. I turned to my husband - what holiday? Mother’s Day he reminded me. I looked at the pile of books we were buying. Ok why don’t you give me that one? The holiday now resembles one of those horrible McMansions, shockingly ostentatious and cheaply made. Still having both kids home for Mother’s Day is a rare treat I haven’t experienced in some time.
@ai6yr Steak dinner comin’ up next weekend. As for this morning, we have a brand-new “not just good, but legit freaking great” #bagel shop that just opened around the corner from us in far north Dallas. Yeah, you read that right — New York bagels in #Dallas (n.b.: it ain’t the water, it’s the recipe & the technique). We bought Mom an everything bagel, and an olive cream cheese schmear which we haven’t been able to find locally here in a decade. Happy wife, happy life! 🥰
@ai6yr For those interested: Starship Bagel, Hillcrest Village shopping center at Hillcrest & Arapaho. They just opened last week and I expect lines out the door by mid-week this week once word gets around.
@mjf_pro Interesting, didn't know Dallas had a shortage of good bagels! I think here in the Los Angeles area, there is such a large NY-LA crossover in population we don't have that issue. (I do remember growing up in Utah where bagels were for the longest time "white bread in bagel shape")
@ai6yr Very good BBQ, Tex-Mex, pan-Asian, Indian, French, continental Italian, and more. We’re not quite the same level of “foodiness” as Chicago or Philly, but we ain’t bad either. Just NY/Philly working-class Italian-style deli and bagels — and Chinese — have tended to be weak or nonexistent here.
@MsMerope LOL Normally Godiva is horrendously expensive, but in years past they definitely dump out their Mother's Day selections at 80-90% off, making it a bargain. (one day difference, HUGE discount).
does not apply to those who are radical conformists, where Mother's Day is intentional conspicous consumption and demonstrative conformity to the norm.
